Jesse Colin Young, the Youngbloods’ lead singer and the voice most closely associated with “Get Together,” died on March 16, 2025, at age 83. He died at his home in Aiken, South Carolina. His wife and manager, Connie Young, announced his death.
What was Jesse Colin Young’s cause of death?
The initial announcement of Young’s death did not give a cause. Later reporting, citing the Aiken County Coroner’s Office, said he died from cardiac complications of atherosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease; the manner of death was classified as natural. Some outlets summarized the finding as a heart attack. The Los Angeles Times and TMZ’s coroner-based report covered the later finding.

Who sang “Get Together”?
Young was co-founder and frontman of the 1960s folk-rock group The Youngbloods. Their recording of “Get Together” became his signature performance. The song was written by Chet Powers, who also performed and wrote under the name Dino Valenti. The Youngbloods first released their version in 1967; RCA reissued it in 1969, bringing it to a much larger audience. Young’s official biography and his official homepage describe the group and song.
The first single reached No. 62; after the 1969 reissue, “Get Together” reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1969. Billboard’s chart history records the Hot 100 peak.

What happened to the Youngbloods singer after the band?
Young continued a long solo career as a singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and producer. His albums included Song for Juli, Light Shine and Songbird; Songbird reached No. 26 on the Billboard 200, according to Billboard Canada. He also owned a record label and took part in podcasting and social and environmental activism.
Young’s official biography says Lyme disease later limited his touring. He continued sharing music through online projects, including One Song at a Time, and worked on later recordings.

Young is survived by his wife, Connie Darden-Young, and children Tristan, Jazzie, Juli and Cheyenne, according to his funeral-home obituary and Billboard Canada. His official homepage says his team plans to share projects he cared about in the months ahead, adding: “Though Jesse has left us, his spirit and music live on.”
Publicist Michael Jensen told the Los Angeles Times, “He was an incredibly active guy.”
