There is no fully verified, up-to-date roll call of Bristol City’s celebrity supporters. The names most clearly supported by direct reporting include actors Joe Sims and Jack Ashton, whom BBC Sport described as lifelong City fans in 2015. Other names come from a 1998 newspaper feature or a more recent secondary compilation, so their evidence and dates matter.
Which Bristol City celebrity supporters are best documented?
The strongest direct reporting in the sources available here concerns actors Joe Sims and Jack Ashton. BBC Sport reported on 19 March 2015 that both were backing Bristol City before the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final at Wembley and described them as lifelong supporters. That establishes their association with the club at the time of the report; it does not establish their current attendance or present-day activity as fans. Read BBC Sport’s report.
What did the historical reporting name?
A 1998 feature in The Independent included Massive Attack members, actor and presenter Tony Robinson, and broadcaster Jonathan Pearce in its discussion of Bristol City’s celebrity support. This is a dated snapshot, not evidence that each person still supports the club today. Read the 1998 Independent feature.
Are Jenson Button and John Cleese Bristol City fans?
Jenson Button
Jenson Button appears on a secondary compilation of celebrity football supporters as a Bristol City fan. The reviewed material did not provide direct confirmation from Button or stronger corroboration, so this is best treated as an attribution reported by that list rather than a firmly established fact. See the Red Penguin compilation.

John Cleese
The same secondary compilation lists John Cleese but notes a competing claim that he supports West Ham. Without a direct statement or stronger corroboration, his Bristol City allegiance remains contested rather than settled. The compilation is useful as a lead, not as definitive proof.
How to read the names and their evidence
| Name or group | Evidence and date | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Joe Sims and Jack Ashton | BBC Sport report, 19 March 2015 | Direct reporting described both as lifelong City fans and said they were backing the team before the Wembley final; it does not verify current match attendance. |
| Massive Attack members, Tony Robinson, Jonathan Pearce | The Independent feature, 1998 | Names included in a historical discussion of celebrity support; current allegiance is not established. |
| Jenson Button | Secondary compilation; date not stated on the cited page | Listed as a supporter, without direct corroboration in the reviewed material. |
| John Cleese | Secondary compilation; date not stated on the cited page | Listed as a supporter, with the compiler noting a competing West Ham attribution. |
These sources differ in both proximity and age: BBC Sport directly reported on Sims and Ashton in 2015, the Independent piece is a 1998 snapshot, and the Button and Cleese claims come from a secondary list. That is why the names should be read as illustrative rather than as a definitive or current roster.

What Bristol City’s heritage projects say about its identity
The Bristol City Supporters Club & Trust documents projects that preserve the club’s history, including commissioning a statue of John Atyeo, establishing a Supporters Hall of Fame, and holding events connected with notable FA Cup history. Its project listings also include “City ’til I Die books.” These activities offer context for the club’s supporter culture, but they do not confirm any individual celebrity’s allegiance. See the Trust’s heritage page and project listings.
