Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce from Ben Affleck in Los Angeles County Superior Court on August 20, 2024, according to reporting by Variety. The date was the second anniversary of their Georgia wedding ceremony. The filing’s timing drew an anonymous source’s interpretation and separate commentary from a California divorce attorney—but neither establishes Lopez’s motive. The divorce was finalized in February 2025.
What the divorce filing said
Variety reported that Lopez filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on August 20, 2024. The Los Angeles Times said its reporters reviewed legal documents supporting the filing report.
The petition listed April 26, 2024, as the couple’s separation date, according to Variety and Us Weekly. That is the date recorded in the filing; it does not independently establish when every aspect of the relationship ended.
August 20 was the second anniversary of their Georgia wedding ceremony. Lopez and Affleck had also married in Las Vegas in July 2022, as Variety reported.

Why the timing was called unusual
An anonymous source’s interpretation
In an August 21, 2024, report, Us Weekly quoted an unnamed Hollywood insider describing the timing as a pointed message to Affleck. That is the source’s characterization, not verified evidence of Lopez’s intent. The filing date and wedding anniversary are reported facts; the motive attributed to them is not established by the reporting.
A lawyer’s view of filing without counsel listed
In a separate Us Weekly interview, California divorce attorney Chris Melcher—who was not involved in the case—said he believed the lack of an attorney of record could signal that the divorce would not become a fight. That was his interpretation of the filing, not a statement from either party and not proof that all issues had already been resolved.
Rank #2
Melcher’s comment is general outside legal analysis, not case-specific legal advice. The filing detail alone cannot establish what legal representation either party had beyond what was listed on that document.
What the filing did not establish
The Los Angeles Times reported that the filing did not disclose whether Lopez and Affleck had a prenuptial agreement. The filing report therefore does not support a claim either way.

The case is no longer pending. The Associated Press reported that a judge approved the settlement on January 6, 2025, and that the divorce became effective February 21, 2025. Most financial details remained private, and neither party would pay the other spousal support, according to the AP report.
