Jennifer Hudson playfully asked Common about his public comments on marriage during his October 3, 2024, appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show. Common said he had been expressing his true feelings and repeated that, if he married, he would marry Hudson. The exchange was affectionate conversation—not an engagement or wedding announcement.
What Jennifer Hudson asked Common
Common appeared on The Jennifer Hudson Show with Pete Rock while promoting their collaborative album The Auditorium Vol. 1. Hudson brought up Common’s earlier comments about their relationship and marriage: “I heard you’ve been even out there talking about marriage. What’s that about?” CNN and Essence reported on the exchange.
What Common said about marrying Hudson
Common explained that he was voicing his real feelings, referring to a quote Hudson had shared from her mother: “A man knows what he wants.” He then said, “If I should be married, it will be to Jennifer Kate Hudson,” according to CNN’s account.
His wording was conditional: he said whom he would marry if he married. Reports described a playful exchange, not a proposal or a statement that a wedding was planned.

Why the comments came up
Hudson was referring to Common’s earlier appearance on The Breakfast Club. In that interview, he described their relationship as healthy and beautiful and said that if he married, he would marry Hudson, as reported by Essence. The October 2024 conversation revisited those remarks while Common and Pete Rock were on Hudson’s show to promote their album.

In a separate appearance on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, reported by TheGrio on October 7, 2026, Hudson described the relationship as “divine, every bit of that.” She also said, “I’ve never been that girl that feels like, ‘Okay, I’ve gotta get married.’” Her comments express that she does not feel marriage is something she has to pursue; they do not announce a wedding plan. TheGrio’s report covers the later interview.
