Jennette McCurdy says her first relationship was with a man in his 30s when she was about 18, and that the experience later helped inspire her novel Half His Age. She has described the age-gap dynamic as troubling and involving a power imbalance. Her accounts differ slightly on the exact ages, and the man has not been identified in the sources reviewed.
What McCurdy said about the relationship
In a conversation with Sofia Coppola published by Interview Magazine on January 28, 2026, McCurdy said, “My first relationship, I was 18 and he was in his 30s.” She described herself at the time as sheltered and said the experience was “definitely the seed” of Half His Age. Interview Magazine
In a January 7, 2026 episode of Call Her Daddy, McCurdy recalled meeting the man through work and spending time around the show’s writers’ room. She described pressure around intimacy and a power dynamic. Those details are McCurdy’s retrospective account, not the result of an independent investigation. Call Her Daddy transcript
Why the ages are not stated consistently
McCurdy told Coppola she was 18 and the man was in his 30s. In the podcast transcript, she said she was “most likely 18,” while also referring to being 19 and to the man being 33 or 34. The available accounts therefore support saying she was about 18 and he was in his 30s, rather than treating one precise age pair as definitive. Interview Magazine · Call Her Daddy transcript

How the experience relates to Half His Age
McCurdy said the relationship was one source for Half His Age, not that the novel is a literal retelling. Interview Magazine describes the fictional protagonist, Waldo, as a 17-year-old who enters a relationship with her creative-writing teacher. McCurdy said writing the book surfaced anger she had not realized remained: “I didn’t realize how angry I still was.” She also said she hoped the novel would spark conversations about desire and power. How the memoir differs from the novel
The Independent reported that McCurdy had previously discussed the relationship in her 2022 memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died. That memoir and Half His Age have different roles: the former is an earlier account of her life, while the latter is fiction that McCurdy said was partly seeded by the experience. Neither should be treated as a verbatim or complete record of the relationship. The Independent
