Jenna Bush Hager said NBC told her not to say “y’all” when she joined the network as a correspondent in 2009, because “Hey, y’all” was not for the whole country. She recounted the exchange on Today with Hoda & Jenna on December 2, 2024. The reports document her recollection, not a formal written NBC ban.
What did NBC tell Jenna Bush Hager?
Bush Hager recalled that when she joined NBC as a correspondent in 2009, she was told: “[They were like], ‘Hey, y’all’ isn’t for the whole country.” She said she answered, “Well, but it’s who I am.” Us Weekly reported the exchange on December 2, 2024, and TV Insider recapped it the following day.
Why did she say the request mattered?
Bush Hager described the instruction as making her feel she had to perform a version of herself. Recalling her reaction, she said: “When they said, ‘You can’t say y’all,’ in my gut, I was like, ‘But why? We have to pretend to be news people?’” She added, “Because whenever you pretend to be a news person, I felt like I was acting.” Today’s account of the conversation reported those remarks.
How did Hoda Kotb frame the conversation?
The hosts were discussing the pressure to change oneself to fit a workplace role. Kotb said, “If you don’t fit, they want you to wear something a certain way, cut your hair a certain way, speak a certain way.” She said adjusting to a role can take time and feel like “losing who you are.” Today’s coverage presents the exchange as a broader discussion about self-presentation, not only a disagreement over one greeting.

Was there a formal NBC ban?
The available reports relay Bush Hager’s account; they do not provide an NBC statement, a written style guide, or other documentation establishing a network-wide rule. The accurate distinction is that Bush Hager said she was told not to use “y’all,” not that a formal NBC policy has been independently verified.
