ABC’s episode descriptions later placed Jelly Roll with contestants in the April 6 Hollywood Week: Showstopper episode and listed his debut in the April 7 Head to Head episode. That distinction separates the announcement’s description of when he would start—during Hollywood Week—from the first appearance specified in ABC’s episode guide.
Why was Jelly Roll chosen?
Jelly Roll had already appeared on Season 22 as a performer and guest mentor. He later told ABC News that the chance to “pay it forward” appealed to him, saying, “Music changed my life.” ABC News also reported that he hoped the residency could become permanent; that was his aspiration, not confirmation of a continuing contract.

Is Jelly Roll returning to American Idol?
A return has not been confirmed in the available official information. ABC Press says the show is expected to return for Season 25 in 2027 on ABC, Disney+ and Hulu, and names Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie as judges. Its series page does not say whether Jelly Roll will return as artist in residence.
For Season 23, TheWrap reported that episodes would stream on Hulu the day after their ABC broadcast. That describes the season’s 2025 distribution arrangement, not a guarantee of present-day availability.
