Jeff Stelling copied Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth’s open-shirt look in a Soccer Saturday moment Sky Sports posted on 29 April 2023. The clip’s title calls Ainsworth a “trendsetter,” but the available sources give no view, share or engagement figures to establish how widely it spread.
What did Jeff Stelling copy from Gareth Ainsworth?
In the clip, Stelling imitates Ainsworth’s open-shirt style. Sky Sports described the moment as Stelling “hilariously” copying the trend, and identified Ainsworth as Wycombe Wanderers’ manager at the time. Sky Sports’ original video page is the source for the clip and its description.
When was the clip posted?
Sky Sports published the video on Saturday 29 April 2023, at 16:05 UK time. Its headline, “’He’s a trendsetter’ | Jeff Stelling copies trend set by Ainsworth,” frames the imitation as a humorous broadcast moment.
Why did the clip draw attention that day?
The video appeared on the same day Stelling announced he would leave Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday at the end of the 2022–23 season. BBC Sport’s contemporaneous report said he had presented the programme for more than 25 years. The timing connects the clip with a major announcement about the presenter, but the reporting does not say that Stelling’s departure announcement was a reaction to the shirt imitation.

The Guardian also reported the departure on 29 April and quoted Stelling as saying, “It is now the right time to move on.” That comment concerned his decision to leave, not the Ainsworth imitation. The Guardian’s report provides that context.
Did the video really go viral?
“Goes viral” appears in the topic wording, but the cited sources do not provide view counts, shares or other engagement data. Sky’s dated post verifies that it published the clip and described the joke; it does not establish a measured level of reach. No statement from Stelling or Ainsworth about the imitation itself is reported in these sources.
