JD Vance’s “childless cat ladies” remark was not originally made about Kamala Harris during the 2024 campaign. He made it in a July 30, 2021, Fox News interview—but the clip resurfaced on July 22, 2024, soon after Donald Trump selected Vance as his running mate. The timing, and Harris’s emergence as the likely Democratic presidential nominee after Joe Biden left the race, turned an old comment into a new political controversy.
What JD Vance said
Speaking with Tucker Carlson on Fox News in 2021, Vance argued that the United States was being governed by Democrats and corporate oligarchs who did not have a direct personal stake in the country’s future. He referred to influential Democrats as “childless cat ladies” and cited Harris, then vice president; Pete Buttigieg, then transportation secretary; and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The wording joined two arguments. One was a gendered insult aimed at political figures who do not have biological children. The other was Vance’s broader claim that people without children are less invested in the nation’s future than parents.
That distinction matters. Vance did not deliver a standalone direct address to Harris saying she was a “childless cat lady.” He named her as one of several Democrats while describing a wider group. Nevertheless, Harris became the central focus of the backlash when the video returned to public attention in 2024.

Why the 2021 clip resurfaced in 2024
The video circulated again shortly after Trump announced Vance as his vice-presidential choice. It also appeared during a rapidly changing campaign: Biden had withdrawn from the presidential race, and Harris had become the likely Democratic nominee.
What might have remained an obscure campaign-era clip therefore became part of the public evaluation of Vance as a national candidate. News coverage and social-media discussion focused on whether the comment was misogynistic, whether it dismissed people who are childfree or unable to have children, and whether it could damage the Republican ticket with women and independent voters.
The record supports saying that the remark sparked backlash and became a recurring campaign issue. It does not establish that the comment, by itself, changed the election or determined any group’s vote.
Why Harris’s family made the premise especially controversial
Harris does not have biological children. But describing her simply as “childless” without further explanation leaves out an important part of her family life: she is the stepmother of Doug Emhoff’s children, Ella and Cole, and part of a blended family.
Harris’s official biography describes that family structure. It does not support saying that she gave birth to or adopted Ella and Cole. The more precise description is that Harris has been their stepmother and an active parent figure within the family.
That fact challenged Vance’s suggestion that a person without biological children has no direct stake in the country’s future. Parenting can include step-parenting, co-parenting, guardianship, and other family responsibilities. Civic concern also does not depend exclusively on whether someone is a biological parent.

The controversy was particularly sensitive in 2024 because reproductive rights, abortion, contraception, and in-vitro fertilization were major political issues. Critics argued that the phrase stigmatized women who do not have children by choice, cannot have children, are undergoing fertility treatment, or simply understand family and public responsibility differently.
How Vance and his defenders responded
Vance said his words were being interpreted unfairly. He and his wife, Usha Vance, characterized the comment as sarcastic, provocative, or poorly phrased rather than as an attack on women who are infertile or on every person without children.

Usha Vance said in August 2024 that the remark was a “quip” and that her husband would not intend to hurt women who were trying to have families. Donald Trump also defended Vance by emphasizing Vance’s commitment to his own family.
Those defenses separated the wording from the larger policy argument Vance wanted to make. His position was that American politics had become hostile to families and children and that public policy should do more to support parents. Critics responded that a family-policy argument does not require treating biological parenthood as a qualification for political legitimacy.
That difference is the heart of the dispute: Vance’s supporters heard a deliberately provocative criticism of an allegedly anti-family political class, while opponents heard a claim that people without biological children are less capable of representing the public.
Criticism from women and conservatives
Democratic critics and childfree advocates said the language reduced women’s value and political seriousness to motherhood. They also objected to the phrase’s implication that someone who is infertile, childfree, single, or part of a blended family is less connected to the country’s future.

The criticism was not limited to Democrats. Fox commentator Tomi Lahren warned that attacks centered on women’s motherhood could alienate female and independent voters. Her reaction illustrated a broader electoral concern inside conservative commentary: even voters sympathetic to Vance’s family-policy message might view the phrase as needlessly insulting or politically dangerous.
At the same time, not every reaction was identical. Some conservatives defended Vance’s intentions, some critics focused on the treatment of women, and others concentrated on Harris’s role in a blended family. The public response was broad, but it was not uniform.
From insult to slogan: Oprah Winfrey and Taylor Swift
The phrase did not remain solely an attack associated with Vance. It was also repurposed by prominent Harris supporters.
At the Democratic National Convention on August 21, 2024, Oprah Winfrey referred to the phrase while describing how people would respond to a burning home belonging to a “childless cat lady”: they would still rescue the cat. Her line turned the insult into a rebuttal of the idea that childless people are detached from other people or from society.
On September 10, 2024, Taylor Swift endorsed Harris and Tim Walz in an Instagram post signed “Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady.” Swift’s sign-off connected the phrase to her public identity as a cat owner and to a broader act of political reclamation involving women’s rights and voting.
Winfrey’s and Swift’s uses gave the expression a new cultural meaning for some audiences. They did not mean that every person using the phrase adopted exactly the same political message, but they demonstrated how a disparaging label can be turned into an identity marker or a response to the person who introduced it into the campaign conversation.

What the controversy says about parenthood and political legitimacy
The dispute is larger than one offensive phrase. It raises a recurring question in public life: does having children give politicians a special understanding of the future, or can anyone have a meaningful stake in the country?
Parents may understandably emphasize the importance of children’s well-being in decisions about education, health care, housing, climate, and the economy. But biological parenthood is not the only source of long-term responsibility. People may care for stepchildren, relatives, students, employees, neighbors, or communities. Many people without children also vote, pay taxes, provide care, and participate in civic institutions that shape the next generation’s lives.

The response to Vance’s comment was not simply that Harris had a private family connection; it was that the category “people without biological children” cannot by itself establish whether someone cares about families or the country’s future.
Later reflection from Vance
In June 2026, Fox News reported that Vance revisited the remark in his book Communion. He reportedly called it one of the dumbest things he had said and described it as intentionally provocative but unhelpful.
That later self-criticism should be treated as a retrospective, not as proof of what he meant in 2021 or as a replacement for the original video. Vance continued to defend the underlying argument that the United States had become hostile to families and children while acknowledging that the “childless cat ladies” wording undermined the point he wanted to make.
Readers who want direct background on Vance can consult Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis. It is a memoir written by Vance, not an impartial account of the controversy or an endorsement of his political views, but it provides additional context about the personal and cultural themes that have shaped his public arguments.

The key distinction
Vance’s comment began as a 2021 argument about whether politicians without children can represent the country’s future. It became a 2024 controversy because the clip resurfaced at the moment he joined the Republican presidential ticket and Harris became the likely Democratic nominee. Harris’s role as a stepmother exposed the limits of equating biological childlessness with indifference to family or country, while Winfrey and Swift helped turn the phrase into a public rebuttal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did JD Vance call Kamala Harris a “childless cat lady” in 2024?
The comment originated in a July 30, 2021, Fox News interview, not in 2024. Vance referred to Harris, Pete Buttigieg, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez while describing a broader group of Democrats as “childless cat ladies.” The clip resurfaced in July 2024 after Vance became Donald Trump’s running mate.
Does Kamala Harris have children?
Harris does not have biological children. She is the stepmother of Doug Emhoff’s children, Ella and Cole, and is part of a blended family. It is more precise to describe her family situation that way than to use “childless” without clarification.
Who reclaimed the “childless cat lady” phrase?
Oprah Winfrey referenced it in her August 2024 Democratic National Convention speech, and Taylor Swift used “Childless Cat Lady” as the sign-off to her September 10, 2024, endorsement of Harris and Tim Walz.

The Bottom Line
Vance’s “childless cat ladies” remark was made in 2021 and resurfaced during the 2024 vice-presidential campaign. The backlash focused not only on the insult but also on its underlying assumption that biological parenthood determines whether someone has a stake in the nation’s future—an assumption challenged by Harris’s role as a stepmother and by the phrase’s later reclamation by Oprah Winfrey and Taylor Swift.
