Jay-Z’s accuser, Jane Doe, recanted her allegations against him in a September 2026 court declaration, saying she had never met or spoken with him and that her claims against him were untrue. Her lawyer said she maintains that she was sexually assaulted but was mistaken in identifying Jay-Z. CBS reported that Jay-Z then filed notice dismissing Doe as a defendant in his ongoing New York case. That development does not resolve the remaining claims against other defendants.
What the original allegation and dismissal mean
Doe’s original New York lawsuit accused Jay-Z, whose legal name is Shawn Corey Carter, and Sean Combs of sexually assaulting her when she was 13. The complaint alleged the assault happened at an after-party following the 2000 Video Music Awards. Carter denied the allegation.
On February 14, 2025, Doe voluntarily dismissed that case with prejudice. The dismissal filing gave no reason for her decision. “With prejudice” means she could not bring the same claim again; it does not mean a judge ruled that the allegation was false or decided what happened. Carter’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, said afterward that Carter “pushed back” and “never settled.” That was Spiro’s characterization, not a court finding.
Why Jay-Z sued Doe and her lawyers
On March 3, 2025, Carter filed a separate lawsuit in Alabama against Doe and attorneys associated with her representation. He alleged that they conspired to defraud and extort him. His complaint pleaded malicious prosecution, abuse of process and civil conspiracy, and alleged defamation by Doe. These are Carter’s claims in the lawsuit; they were not findings that the defendants committed those acts.

What the Alabama court decided—and did not decide
On March 31, 2026, the Alabama federal court transferred Carter’s case to the Southern District of New York. It left motions to dismiss the claims on their merits, as well as motions concerning Doe’s pseudonym, for the receiving court. The transfer addressed where the case would proceed; it did not decide whether Carter’s allegations were true or whether the claims should be dismissed.
In a March 2025 declaration, Doe had said she stood by the New York allegations and had authorized the demand letter and litigation. Her September 2026 declaration later reversed her position on Carter: she said she had never met him and that there was no truth to her claims against him. Her new lawyer said she still maintains she experienced sexual assault, but was mistaken in identifying Carter. These are Doe’s and her lawyer’s statements, not a judicial determination about the underlying assault allegation.

What remains unresolved
The California action is separate from Carter’s transferred New York lawsuit. The reported California appellate affirmance does not decide the merits of the New York case. The latest court order identified for the New York case is the March 31, 2026 transfer order, which left merits and pseudonym motions for the receiving court. September 2026 reporting added Doe’s recantation and Carter’s notice dismissing her as a defendant, but no later ruling resolving the remaining New York claims is established here.
