Jay-Z and Nas’s feud reached its clearest public peak in 2001, when Jay-Z’s “Takeover” and Nas’s answer, “Ether,” turned their rivalry into a highly visible rap battle. The two later reconciled publicly at Jay-Z’s 2005 “I Declare War” concert and went on to collaborate. The exact origin of the feud is less settled: retrospective accounts document the major public milestones, but do not establish one definitive cause.
What was the Jay-Z and Nas feud?
It was a public lyrical rivalry between two leading New York rappers, brought into sharp focus by diss tracks in 2001. The best-documented climax centers on “Takeover,” released on Jay-Z’s The Blueprint, and “Ether,” Nas’s response on Stillmatic. Retrospective coverage also describes radio and live performance as part of how the battle reached audiences, with Hot 97 featuring prominently in accounts of the period.
The feud is often discussed as if it began with one definitive incident. The available retrospective accounts do not settle that question. Early exchanges and explanations of the artists’ motives are not fully adjudicated by the sources cited here, so a single origin story should be treated as an account or interpretation rather than established fact.
Timeline: the feud’s public milestones
2001: Jay-Z performs “Takeover” at Summer Jam
Jay-Z performed “Takeover” at Summer Jam in 2001. The track appeared on The Blueprint and became a central public moment in the rivalry. Retrospective accounts place Hot 97 at the center of the way the battle reached listeners, although the broad sequence does not establish every detail of the radio station’s role. Pitchfork’s account of Jay-Z and Hot 97 and Complex’s history of the rivalry discuss that public context.

2001: Nas answers with “Ether”
Nas responded with “Ether,” released on Stillmatic. It became the defining reply in the exchange. The order of the two tracks is clear in retrospective coverage: “Takeover” came first, followed by “Ether.” Complex’s chronology covers the battle, while TIME’s retrospective on notable celebrity feuds places the rivalry among its prominent examples.
2005: a public reconciliation in Philadelphia
TIME reports that the former rivals embraced onstage and performed together at Jay-Z’s “I Declare War” concert in Philadelphia in 2005. That moment is a clear public reconciliation milestone. It does not establish the precise date when every private disagreement between them ended.

After the concert: “Black Republican”
TIME reports that Jay-Z and Nas later collaborated on “Black Republican,” which appeared on Nas’s Hip Hop Is Dead. The collaboration made their change in public relationship audible as well as visible: their story had moved beyond exchanging diss tracks to working together.
Later: Nas describes being able to joke about the feud
Later interview coverage reports Nas saying that he and Jay-Z are now able to joke about their past feud. That is Nas’s characterization, as relayed in the coverage, rather than a claim about every aspect of their relationship. Complex’s coverage of Nas reflecting on the diss tracks and Revolt’s report on his comments describe this later perspective.

“Takeover” and “Ether”: what to know about the key tracks
The most reliable comparison is grounded in sequence, album context, and each track’s role in the public exchange. Calling one the winner is a judgment, not a verifiable result: listeners and critics can value different things in a diss track, and the cited retrospective accounts do not establish an objective victor.
| Track | Artist | Place in the exchange | Album context | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| “Takeover” | Jay-Z | Released and performed publicly before Nas’s defining response; Jay-Z performed it at Summer Jam 2001. | The Blueprint | A central public moment in the 2001 rivalry, as described in Complex’s retrospective account and Pitchfork’s coverage of Hot 97’s role. |
| “Ether” | Nas | Nas’s answer to “Takeover” and the defining response in the exchange. | Stillmatic | Its place as the response and its album context are described in Complex’s history. |
Arguments about the tracks’ lyrical technique, impact, or which rapper prevailed belong to criticism and listener opinion. The documented chronology explains why both songs remain central to accounts of the feud, without turning a cultural debate into a settled score.

Why the feud’s beginning is hard to state as a fact
Retrospective music and culture coverage is useful for tracing the best-known public milestones, but it is not a complete primary archive of every subliminal exchange or private disagreement. The sources establish a public rivalry and its major 2001 tracks; they do not provide a definitive, universally accepted initiating incident. Where an account names an earlier slight or motive, it should be attributed to that account rather than presented as the uncontested explanation.
This distinction also helps separate the public story from the private one. A performance, a released song, or an onstage embrace can be documented in retrospective coverage. Those events do not by themselves reveal all the artists’ private motivations or the exact moment any underlying tension began or ended.

How did Jay-Z and Nas’s feud end?
The clearest public answer is their 2005 onstage reconciliation at the “I Declare War” concert in Philadelphia, followed by their collaboration on “Black Republican.” These are observable public milestones reported by TIME, not proof that every disagreement was resolved on a single date. Nas’s later comments, as covered by Complex and Revolt, add that the two can now joke about the diss tracks.
For a documentary-minded account, the strongest through-line is therefore the public sequence: a rivalry whose most visible lyrical clash came in 2001; a public reconciliation in 2005; and subsequent collaboration and later reflection. Claims about a single cause or a definitive winner need more qualification than that timeline does.
