How to Change Disney+ Subtitle, Audio, and Accessibility Settings

Change Disney+ audio, subtitle, and caption options during playback, adjust caption styling by device, and find out why a language or audio description track may be missing.

To change subtitles, captions, or spoken language on Disney+, start playing a title and open the playback settings. Choose an available audio or subtitle option, then close the menu with the X or back arrow. Disney+ saves the choice to your profile and reuses it when a later title offers that track. The menu controls vary by device, and not every title or region has the same language options.

If you’re asking, “How do I change the language of videos on Disney+?” the short answer is: change the audio track while the video is playing. For subtitles or closed captions, use the same playback menu and choose an option under subtitles. If the track you want is missing, check the title and region before assuming the setting failed; a profile language preference cannot add a version Disney+ does not offer.

Change a video’s audio language, subtitles, or captions

Disney+ changes audio and subtitle tracks from the controls for the video that is currently playing. You do not need to leave playback and change a general setting first. The precise control used to open the menu depends on where you watch, but the sequence is the same: start the title, open its playback settings, choose an available track, and return to the video.

  1. Start playback. Open the show or movie you want to watch and begin playing it. The audio and subtitle choices are available from the player while the title is playing.
  2. Open the playback settings. On web and mobile, the keyboard/settings icon is typically at the upper right. On TV-connected devices it is typically at the lower right; some devices show a three-dot icon. On Roku, press the remote’s * button. On Apple TV, swipe down on the remote.
  3. Choose the tracks. Select the desired audio language and subtitle language. Closed captions (CC) appear among the subtitle options. Choose from the options actually listed for that title; the menu cannot select a track that is not available.
  4. Close the menu. Select the X or back arrow to return to playback.

These steps follow Disney+ Help Center’s instructions for changing the language of videos on Disney+. The setting is saved to the profile, but it only applies when the next title has that language or caption track.

Roku Streaming Stick HD with Voice Remote
  • HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

Where to find the playback menu

On a computer or mobile device, look near the upper-right part of the player for the settings or keyboard icon. On a TV-connected device, look near the lower-right corner. A three-dot icon may take the place of the keyboard icon on some TV-connected devices, so do not assume that the same symbol appears everywhere.

Some platforms use a remote action instead of asking you to point to an on-screen icon. On Roku, press the remote’s * button to open the relevant controls. On Apple TV, swipe down on the remote. Once the audio and subtitle choices are visible, use the device’s normal selection controls to choose a listed track. Close the panel with the X or back arrow to resume the video.

The menu position and icon are the main platform differences for changing tracks. The choice itself still depends on what the title offers. A language appearing in the menu for one show does not mean that every other show has the same audio, subtitle, or caption track.

Audio language, subtitles, and closed captions are separate choices

The playback panel lets you select a spoken audio track and a subtitle or caption option. If the goal is to hear dialogue in another language, choose that language under audio. If the goal is to read dialogue, choose a subtitle option. Closed captions are listed with subtitle choices as CC. Select the option that matches what you want to use rather than expecting a single language setting to change both audio and on-screen text.

After you make a selection, Disney+ saves it to the profile. That makes it easier to use the same preference on later viewing, but it is not a guarantee that the next title has the same track. The selection is reused only when the next video offers that language or caption option. If a new title plays in another language or displays a different caption option, reopen its playback menu and check what is available for that title.

Why the language or caption you want may be missing

Disney+ language options vary by title and country or region. A title may not have a dub, subtitle, or caption track in every language, even if your profile’s preferred language is set to that language. Changing a setting cannot add a track that is not offered for that title or market.

If the expected language is absent, first check that you opened the playback menu and looked under the appropriate audio or subtitle section. Then try another title: if its options appear normally, the issue may be specific to the first title. For a missing language version, Disney+ also recommends trying the desired App Language in the profile settings; this may expose a version that exists for the title, but it cannot create one that is unavailable in your region.

There are two different questions to check: does the title have the track, and does Disney+ offer that version in your country or region? Device controls determine how you open the menu, while title and regional availability determine which choices appear in it. If a language is missing on one title but available on another, that points to a title-specific difference rather than a universal change to the playback controls.

Roku Ultra, Ultimate Streaming Player - 4K Streaming Device for TV
  • Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
  • Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
  • The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

Similarly, the profile’s preferred language and the versions available for a particular title are not the same thing. A profile preference may affect which version is surfaced, but it does not manufacture an audio or subtitle track. If a version is not offered for that title or region, it will remain unavailable regardless of the preference.

Change caption and subtitle appearance

Caption styling is often controlled by the device’s accessibility settings rather than by one universal Disney+ control. Disney+ documents the routes below in its caption and subtitle formatting guide. Device software and manufacturer versions can change menu names or locations.

These routes are useful when captions are available but are difficult to read or do not look the way you want. The control is not in the same place on every device: some systems have an accessibility style menu, while Disney+ documents an in-player styling option for smart TVs and for supported web browsers. Follow the route for the device you are using, not simply the route for a device you own but are not currently watching on.

Device or platform Documented route
iPhone or iPad Open Settings → Accessibility → Subtitles & Captioning → Style. Choose a preset or create a custom style. For custom font, size, color, and opacity, turn off Video Override.
Android (Google devices) Open Settings → Accessibility → Caption preferences → Caption size and style.
Samsung Android Open Settings → Accessibility → Hearing, choose Google subtitles (CC) or Samsung subtitles (CC), enable the option, and adjust its size or style. Exact locations may vary by manufacturer.
Smart TV While a Disney+ video plays, open Audio & Subtitles → Subtitle Styling. Changes save automatically.
Apple TV Open Settings → General → Accessibility → Subtitles & Captioning → Style.
Amazon Fire TV From the home screen, open Settings → Accessibility, turn on Closed Caption, and customize display preferences. Disney+ notes that subtitles are unavailable on first-generation Fire TV Stick.
Chromecast Adjust caption settings on the device you are using to cast.
Xbox Open Settings → Ease of Access → Closed Captioning.
PlayStation Open Settings → Accessibility → Closed Captions, enable display, then open Closed Captions Settings.
Web browser During playback, open Audio & Subtitles and select the gear icon for Subtitle Styling. Some browsers do not support this customization.

What to know about the platform-specific styling routes

On iPhone and iPad, the Style screen offers presets as well as a custom-style option. If you want to set font, size, color, and opacity yourself, Disney+’s documented instructions say to turn off Video Override for those custom choices. If Video Override remains on, it may take precedence over the custom style for those settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Android, the route depends on the device maker. Google devices place caption options under Caption preferences, while Samsung Android devices offer a choice between Google subtitles (CC) and Samsung subtitles (CC) under Accessibility and Hearing. Samsung’s route includes enabling the selected subtitle option before adjusting size or style. Menu names and locations may vary across manufacturers, so the labels on a particular phone may differ.

On smart TVs, Disney+ documents styling from the playback menu: open Audio & Subtitles while a video is playing, then choose Subtitle Styling. Changes save automatically. This differs from the Apple TV route, which is in the device’s Settings app under General and Accessibility, rather than in Disney+ playback.

For Amazon Fire TV, the documented route begins at the device home screen, not in the player: open Settings, then Accessibility, turn on Closed Caption, and customize display preferences. There is an important compatibility caveat: Disney+ notes that subtitles are unavailable on first-generation Fire TV Stick. If you are using that specific model, changing its display preferences will not make Disney+ subtitles available on it.

For Chromecast, make the change on the device being used to cast. For Xbox and PlayStation, use their accessibility or ease-of-access settings. On the web, the styling gear appears in the Audio & Subtitles playback menu, but browser support is not universal. If the gear or styling controls are absent, the browser may not support that customization; it does not necessarily mean that the subtitle track itself is missing.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

These are Disney+ Help Center’s documented routes, not a promise that every software version uses identical wording. Device updates and manufacturer differences can move settings or change labels. If the named path does not match your screen, look for the related Accessibility, Captioning, or Subtitles settings on the device you are using.

Turn on audio description

Audio description is a separate audio track that describes important visual details, such as action or scene changes. During playback, open the player settings and choose Audio Description in the preferred language if it is listed. On a TV-connected device, Disney+ says to press up before opening the menu; on mobile, tap the screen to reveal the controls first. The option appears only when the title, language, and region support it. See Disney+’s player controls and settings guidance.

Audio description is not a subtitle style or a caption setting. It is an audio track, so look among the audio choices in the playback menu. On a TV-connected device, press up to bring up the menu as Disney+ describes; on mobile, tap the screen first to reveal player controls. Then choose Audio Description in the available language. If it is not listed, the title, language, or region may not support that option.

Because audio description is a separate track, changing caption appearance will not turn it on. Likewise, choosing a spoken-language track is not the same as selecting Audio Description. Open the playback settings and choose the specific audio option you need. As with other tracks, the availability of audio description can differ from one title or language to another.

Troubleshoot missing or incorrect options

If a video is not playing in the language you want, work through the checks in order: confirm the selected track in playback settings, compare with another title, check the device’s accessibility settings if the problem concerns captions, and then try the profile’s App Language if a version may be missing. This helps separate a menu or device-setting issue from a title or regional limitation.

Check the title and the device

  • Reopen the playback settings and confirm that the desired audio, subtitle, or CC option is selected.
  • For caption display or appearance problems, check the device’s accessibility settings using the route for that platform above.
  • Try another video. If the same issue affects multiple titles, move on to general playback troubleshooting; if it affects only one, its available tracks may be the limiting factor.

When checking the menu, verify that you are looking in the right category: audio tracks are audio choices, while subtitles and CC are among subtitle choices. A track can be selected only if it appears among the choices for that title. If it appears but is not selected, choose it and close the menu with the X or back arrow.

If the problem is that captions are too small or hard to read rather than absent, the device styling route is the next check. Disney+ does not use one universal caption-appearance setting across all platforms. Review the table for the device currently in use, and remember that browser support for styling varies. If the issue is isolated to a single title, compare its available options with another video before changing profile-wide preferences.

Try the profile’s App Language

If a language version is missing, edit the profile and try the desired App Language. According to Disney+’s guidance, if a version exists in that language it may then become available. If it does not exist for the title or region, changing App Language will not add it. Disney+ says playback defaults to English when the requested version is unavailable, or to another available version if English is unavailable. See Disney+ guidance for videos not playing in the desired language.

Roku Streaming Stick 4K with Voice Remote - HDR10+ & Dolby Vision

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

This is a possible way to surface an existing version, not a way to create a new dub or subtitle track. After trying the desired App Language, return to the title’s playback menu and check the available audio or subtitle choices again. If the version still is not offered, the title or regional catalog may not include it. The profile’s playback preference is saved for later viewing only when a title has the selected option.

When the requested version is unavailable, Disney+ says playback defaults to English, or to another available version if English is not available. That fallback describes what may happen when the preferred version is missing; it does not mean that English or any other specific track is guaranteed for every title. The available alternatives depend on the title and market.

When captions are still unavailable

Disney+ says most titles offer closed captions, with rare exceptions, and availability can also vary by language. If captions remain unavailable after checking the title and device settings, use the closed-captioning contact route linked from Disney+ Help Center’s language settings help page.

Keep the distinction between a caption track and caption styling in mind when contacting support: one question is whether the title offers captions in the language you need, and another is whether the device can display them in the style you prefer. Check the playback menu for the track first, then check the device route if the track exists but its appearance is the problem. Disney+ notes that captions are available for most titles, but the stated rare exceptions and language variation mean that availability is not universal.

Which setting should you change?

Use the playback menu when you want to change the spoken language, turn subtitles or CC on, or select audio description. Use device accessibility settings when you want to change how captions look, except where Disney+ documents an in-player styling menu for smart TVs and supported web browsers. Use the profile’s App Language only as a possible way to surface an existing language version when the expected one is absent.

This device-first, then title-and-region check is the useful comparison for troubleshooting. The control path can differ between web, mobile, Roku, Apple TV, and other TV-connected devices. Once the menu is open, however, the list of available tracks is determined by the title and country or region. Switching devices may change how you reach the menu; it does not guarantee that a language version unavailable for the title or region will appear.

No special accessory or new streaming device is required for these settings. The described changes use Disney+ playback controls and the accessibility options already provided by the device or platform. If the title does not offer a track, buying a different remote or changing a caption style cannot add that track.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are subtitles and closed captions on Disney+?

While a video is playing, open playback settings and choose a subtitle option. Closed captions (CC) are listed under subtitle options. The menu is typically at the upper right on web and mobile and lower right on TV-connected devices; Roku uses the remote’s * button and Apple TV uses a swipe down on its remote.

Why is the audio language I want not listed?

Audio and subtitle availability varies by title and country or region. Check the playback menu, then try another title to see whether the issue is specific to one video. Trying the desired App Language in the profile may surface a version that exists, but it cannot add a version Disney+ does not offer.

How do I make Disney+ captions bigger or change their style?

The route depends on your device. For example, iPhone and iPad use Settings → Accessibility → Subtitles & Captioning → Style, while Android devices have caption preferences under Accessibility. See the device table in this guide for the documented routes, and note that some browsers do not support web caption styling.

How do I turn on audio description on Disney+?

During playback, open the player settings and choose Audio Description in an available language. On TV-connected devices, Disney+ says to press up before opening the menu; on mobile, tap the screen to reveal controls. The option appears only when the title, language, and region support it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Disney+ save subtitle and audio choices?

Yes. Disney+ saves the choice to the profile and reuses it for later titles when the selected language or caption track is available. The saved preference does not guarantee that every title has that track.

What if captions are unavailable even after I check the settings?

Most Disney+ titles offer closed captions, with rare exceptions, and availability can vary by language. Check the title’s playback options and the device’s accessibility settings. For persistent availability concerns, use the closed-captioning contact route linked from Disney+ Help Center’s language settings help page.

The Bottom Line

Change Disney+ audio, subtitles, CC, and audio description from the playback menu while a title is playing; use your device’s accessibility settings to adjust caption appearance where supported. Menu controls vary by platform, and track availability varies by title and region. A profile preference can be saved or help surface an existing version, but it cannot create a track that Disney+ does not offer.
