Yes—but only at the early stage of the case. On December 26, 2024, U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres allowed the plaintiff, identified publicly as Jane Doe, to proceed anonymously for the time being. The ruling did not guarantee anonymity for the life of the case and did not decide whether the allegations were true. The federal civil action was voluntarily dismissed with prejudice in February 2025. In September 2026, Doe filed a declaration saying her claims against Shawn Carter, known as Jay-Z, were false and that she had never met him; her lawyer said she maintains she was sexually assaulted but mistakenly identified Carter.
What did the judge decide about anonymity?
Judge Torres’s December 26, 2024 order in the Southern District of New York applied the Second Circuit’s framework for deciding whether a civil plaintiff may use a pseudonym. The court balanced the plaintiff’s interest in privacy against the public interest in knowing who is bringing a case and the potential prejudice to defendants.
The judge found that the balance favored anonymity “at least for this stage of the litigation.” The order considered the sensitive and personal nature of the allegations, the potential harm from disclosure, the plaintiff’s vulnerability and her prior confidentiality. It also recognized that anonymity could prejudice the defendants and said the balance could change as the case progressed. Read the December 26, 2024 order.
In practical terms, the court permitted the plaintiff to use Jane Doe in the early proceedings; it did not issue a blanket, permanent guarantee that her name could never be disclosed.

Did the ruling establish that the allegations were true?
No. The order addressed pseudonymity and other procedural issues, not whether the alleged events occurred. Judge Torres also rejected Carter’s motion to strike the amended complaint under Rule 12(f), but that procedural ruling was not a finding that the allegations were true.
The allegations should therefore be described as allegations, not as facts established by a court. The anonymity decision did not resolve the merits.

What happened to the civil case?
The complaint was first filed anonymously against Sean Combs in October 2024. An amended complaint added Carter in December. In February 2025, the plaintiff voluntarily dismissed the federal civil action with prejudice. The dismissal filing did not state a reason, so the dismissal alone does not establish why the plaintiff ended the case or imply that a settlement occurred. AP reported on the dismissal.
What did the plaintiff say in September 2026?
In a declaration filed in federal court, Doe said that Carter had not raped her, that she had never met or spoken with him, and that there was no truth to her claims against him, according to CBS News on September 25, 2026. Those statements are attributed to Doe; they are not a new judicial finding.

Doe’s lawyer told CBS that she maintains she was sexually assaulted but was entirely mistaken in identifying Carter. That is the lawyer’s account of Doe’s position and should be distinguished from both her declaration and any court ruling.

Separate litigation involving Carter and attorney Tony Buzbee is distinct from the dismissed civil action. CBS reported that Carter’s malicious-prosecution case against Buzbee and his firm remained ongoing in New York and that Carter had filed notice dismissing Doe as a defendant. CBS’s report on the related New York litigation describes that status as of September 25, 2026.

On September 29, 2026, Bloomberg Law reported that Carter had sought rehearing of a California appellate decision affirming dismissal of his claims against Buzbee. That is a separate proceeding and a rehearing request, not a reversal of the appellate decision. Bloomberg Law reported on the request. These procedural matters can change as courts act on filings.
