A September 2026 NBC News report described a later statement in a court filing in which she said her allegations against Jay-Z were false and that she had never met him. These are distinct accounts at different points in time; neither should be confused with a court finding about the alleged assault.
What the accuser said in December 2024
The civil complaint alleged that Jay-Z, whose legal name is Shawn Carter, and Combs assaulted the woman at an after-party connected with the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. The complaint’s account was an allegation, not an adjudicated fact.
In an interview published by NBC News on December 13, 2024, the woman acknowledged errors in parts of her recollection. “I have made some mistakes,” she said. In a follow-up, she said, “I may have made a mistake in identifying.” The NBC report also said she continued to stand by the allegations overall at that time. Her acknowledgment therefore concerned inconsistencies in details; it was not a full recantation in that interview.
Which details were reported as inconsistent
- The woman recalled that her father picked her up after the alleged assault. NBC News reported that her father said he did not remember doing so.
- She recalled speaking with musician Benji Madden. A representative for Madden said he and his brother Joel were touring in the Midwest during the VMAs.
- NBC News also reported that images placed Carter and Combs at another venue for part of the night, while noting that their whereabouts for the entire evening were unclear.
These were reported discrepancies and contextual details. On their own, they do not establish what happened or did not happen.

How the 2024 interview differs from the later statement

The September 2026 report describes a different statement from the December 2024 interview. The change should be reported with its date and source rather than retroactively treating the 2024 comments as a recantation.
Jay-Z denied the allegation; his lawyers challenged it
Carter denied the allegation. In a statement reported by NBC News, he said, “This incident didn’t happen.” His lawyers also argued in a court filing that the account contained serious inconsistencies and sought relief from the court. Those arguments represented the defense’s position; they were not a court ruling on whether the alleged assault occurred.

What the 2026 court order did—and did not—decide
A March 31, 2026 order transferred Carter’s separate malicious-prosecution suit against attorney Tony Buzbee and others to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, leaving specified motions for that court. The order summarized Carter’s allegations in that lawsuit; it did not adjudicate the underlying assault allegation.
More broadly, a statement included in a party’s court filing, an allegation in a complaint, and a court’s factual finding are different things. The later statement reported by NBC News should be attributed to the filing, not presented as a judicial determination.
