What Jay Leno said about caring for Mavis
Leno made the remarks during an April 2025 appearance on In Depth with Graham Bensinger. AOL reported on the interview on April 24; The Guardian published a broader feature about dementia caregiving on May 2, amended May 5, 2025, and described Mavis as having advanced dementia at that time.
The Guardian quoted Leno describing hands-on care: “It’s a challenge” he says “having to feed her, change her, carry her to the bathroom. It’s not that I enjoy doing it but I guess I enjoy doing it.” He also said: “I like taking care of her. I like that I am needed. That’s really what love is.”
The Guardian reported that Leno mostly cared for Mavis himself. His comments convey both the demands of the daily tasks he described and the personal meaning he finds in being needed by his wife.

What the remark means—and what it does not
“That’s really what love is” was Leno’s description of his own relationship and caregiving commitment. It should not be read as a prescription for how every family ought to manage dementia care: people’s circumstances, health, resources and support differ, and the account does not evaluate care options.
The Guardian’s feature placed his experience alongside wider challenges for dementia carers, including isolation, burnout and the need to plan for interruptions in care. Dementia Australia director of client services Barbra Williams stressed the importance of arranging backup before a caregiver becomes unwell, involving the person with dementia in planning where possible, and prioritising the caregiver’s wellbeing.

These are figures presented in that 2025 feature, not estimates of the Lenos’ circumstances.

The available reporting establishes what Leno said in 2025 and what The Guardian reported about the couple at that time.
