Spoilers for the ending of Jay Kelly. Jay’s final request—“Can I go again? I’d like another one”—is a wish for another chance at his life, especially the time he gave to his acting career instead of being present for his daughters. The film makes that regret clear, but leaves open whether Jay will change what he does next.
What happens in the final scene?
At a tribute to his career, Jay watches a reel celebrating his work. The montage shifts from his filmography and the people gathered in the theater to a backyard performance by his young daughters. Jay is preparing to leave for work, as he did in the past, but in this version he puts down his briefcase and stays to watch.
The film does not settle whether the backyard scene is a memory or an imagined alternative. Netflix Tudum notes that Jay’s expression suggests he is imagining the choice he wishes he had made. When the reel ends and the audience applauds, he asks, “Can I go again? I’d like another one.” Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer also reports that Noah Baumbach had the final line in mind early and built the film toward it.
What does Jay’s final line mean?
The line carries two meanings at once. In the immediate setting, Jay has just watched a tribute reel, so “go again” could sound like a request to replay the presentation. But the imagined scene with his daughters turns the words into a plea for another chance at his life: a chance to make different choices about work and family.

The film’s structure supports that reading. Cosmopolitan’s interpretation connects the final request to the opening, where Jay asks for another take while making a film. At the end, the idea of another take is no longer just about a performance. The applause celebrates his public success; the daughters’ scene makes him confront what that success may have cost him privately.
Does Jay get another chance with his daughters?
The ending expresses regret, not a shown reconciliation. It does not reveal that Jay will leave acting, repair his relationships, or become a more present father. Jessica is still hurt and declines his invitation to the tribute, as the accounts from Netflix Tudum and Cosmopolitan describe. Jay’s wish cannot undo the time he missed, and the film ends before showing what he does with the insight.

Why does Ron’s presence matter?
Ron stays for the tribute, offering support at a moment when Jay is taking stock of his life. But he also ends their professional relationship. That combination gives the scene a limit: Jay may have people beside him, but he cannot assume they will keep organizing their lives around his career. His final request comes after that bond has reached a turning point.

- Memory or fantasy: the film does not establish whether the backyard performance is an actual memory or an imagined alternative.
- Regret or change: Jay recognizes what he wishes he had done differently, but the film does not show whether he acts differently afterward.
- Forgiveness: the ending offers no confirmation that his daughters forgive him or that their relationships are repaired.
Baumbach told Netflix that he had the final line early and reverse-engineered the film toward it. That makes the request the endpoint of the story’s ideas about performance, regret, and the desire to begin again—not proof that Jay can literally repeat his life.
