Jason Momoa had been telling producer Peter Safran he wanted to play Lobo well before the role was announced, Safran recalled. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Safran said Momoa raised the character while they were working on Aquaman, then sent Safran and James Gunn a blunt message when they took charge of DC Studios: “LOBO.”
What Peter Safran says Momoa did to pursue Lobo
Safran told Entertainment Weekly that Momoa had expressed interest in Lobo while working with him on Aquaman. Safran remembered Momoa saying, “I’d rather be doing Lobo.” He summed up the persistence this way: “He’s been talking about it forever.”
Safran said Momoa made his preference unmistakable when Safran and Gunn were announced as DC Studios’ new leaders. Momoa texted both of them, Safran recalled, in all caps: “LOBO,” followed by ten exclamation marks and “a few Xs.” Safran said the role moved forward once the script was ready. This is Safran’s account of the conversations and casting path, rather than an independently observed record of every step.
Why Lobo appealed to Momoa
Momoa’s interest in the character was also public. In comments from a Fandango Big Ticket interview reported by SYFY Wire, he described reading Lobo comics as a child and called the experience of playing the character “the weirdest thing on Earth.”

Lobo is a galactic bounty hunter associated with a motorcycle-riding, rough-edged persona, a striking contrast to the more heroic Aquaman role Momoa had played in DC films. Safran’s anecdote describes Momoa advocating for Lobo; it does not establish that he rejected Aquaman or formally campaigned against that role.
What is confirmed about Lobo in Supergirl
Warner Bros.’ official film page lists Momoa in the cast, with Craig Gillespie directing and Ana Nogueira writing the screenplay. The film draws on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.
