Across 13 songs, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit move between intimate portraits of flawed people and expansive rock arrangements, letting quiet details gather force before the band opens up. The result is a compelling, carefully made record whose familiar themes will feel like mature refinement to some listeners and repetition to others.
What kind of album is Weathervanes?
Released in 2023, Weathervanes is Jason Isbell’s sixth album with the 400 Unit, and it runs about an hour across 13 tracks. The songs keep returning to people caught between their choices and the circumstances they inherit: depression, strained relationships, other people’s mistakes, and the stories communities tell about themselves. Axios identifies those concerns across songs including “Volunteer,” “White Beretta,” “Middle of the Morning,” “Death Wish” and “Cast Iron Skillet,” though no single theme explains every narrator.
Isbell described the characters to GRAMMY.com as “fallible and they’re human. And I think they’re all trying to do their best in one way or another.” He also said, “There’s a lot of me that’s in each of them — some moreso than others.” Those remarks illuminate the record’s sympathy without making every song autobiography: its changing perspectives leave room for invented, composite and observed lives.
How do the songs and arrangements work?
Isbell produced the album, with Matt Pence contributing additional production on some tracks, according to Pitchfork. The arrangements often leave space around the voices and instruments rather than crowding each song with constant motion. That patience can make the record feel understated at first, but it gives the band room to shape tension and release.

Quiet songs that keep their edge
In “Cast Iron Skillet,” restraint sharpens the unease instead of softening it. “Middle of the Morning” and “White Beretta” likewise draw attention to intimate, unsettled material. The songs depend on the weight of the scenes and the implications around them, not on a large arrangement announcing what the listener should feel.
When the 400 Unit pushes outward
“Death Wish” and “Save the World” turn that tension into more forceful, band-driven urgency. The contrast is a major part of the album’s design: the louder passages land because the record has spent time holding back. Pitchfork’s Stephen Thomas Erlewine praises the 400 Unit’s interplay and hears the spacious arrangements as music that can breathe on stage, rather than as a collection of tightly packed studio gestures.

The closing pair, “This Ain’t It” and “Miles,” stretches toward open-ended road-jam territory. Their looseness gives the album a different kind of finish from a neatly resolved final statement. For listeners drawn to the band’s playing, that sense of movement is part of the reward; for those wanting more changes of pace, some of the album’s measured stretches may feel too similar.
Does the songwriting feel specific or familiar?
The strongest case for Weathervanes is its attention to particular people under pressure. Isbell’s narrators are not simply examples of a theme: they are imperfect, implicated, and often trying to make sense of what they can and cannot control. That human scale keeps the songs from becoming easy moral lessons, even when the subjects are painful.

The reservation is that Isbell’s established interests—fallibility, regret, family and the costs of one’s choices—are familiar territory. The Line of Best Fit describes the album as a cautious refinement and questions whether some themes feel recycled; Glide Magazine praises the lyrics’ strong points while finding much of the music settled into similar mid-tempo modes. Those are critical judgments, not objective verdicts, but they identify a real listening choice: the continuity can register as depth and consistency, or as a narrower range than the writing might support.
How does it stand against Isbell’s established style?
Weathervanes does not hinge on a dramatic reinvention. Its appeal is the interplay between Isbell’s close, character-centered writing and a band able to shift from quiet unease to broad, open rock without making the contrast feel arbitrary. If you want a sharp break from his prior work, the album may sound cautious. If you value songs that disclose more through their details and arrangements on repeat listens, that restraint is a strength.

Critical reception reflects both sides of that assessment. Rolling Stone’s review, as listed by Metacritic, called it “Brutally beautiful” and Isbell’s strongest to date. Pitchfork offers a more measured positive account, emphasizing the slow-building character and the band’s interplay. Metacritic also placed the album at No. 98 in its Best Albums of 2023 ranking; that is a year-end ranking, not a review score.
