Jared Leto’s fashion is at its best when the spectacle has a point: a sharply cut suit, a strong color, or a stage look that belongs under the lights. It can also tip into glorious absurdity—most memorably when he carried a replica of his own head to the 2019 Met Gala. Here are ten looks that make the case for his style, followed by ten that may leave viewers wondering where the costume ends and the outfit begins. “Best” and “second-hand embarrassment” are subjective judgments, not a definitive ranking or proof that Leto regrets any of them.
How to judge Jared Leto’s best and most awkward fashion moments
Leto’s style has moved from 1990s grunge-influenced denim, oversized knits and plaid to bright Gucci coats, 1970s-inspired tailoring and custom flared trousers, as British GQ traced in a 2021 profile. He has described style as personal and dependent on mood and activity: “My style depends on my mood and what I’m doing.” That distinction matters here: a theatrical stage outfit is doing a different job from a red-carpet suit.
The choices below weigh event or theme fit, silhouette, color and embellishment, and whether a look seems designed for wearability or performance. British GQ has its own gallery of ten selected highlights; this list is an independent, subjective selection, not an objective canon. British GQ’s 2021 interview with Leto and its style gallery offer useful context.
Ten Jared Leto fashion moments that work
1. The bright Gucci coat
A vivid Gucci coat gives Leto’s appetite for spectacle a clean outline: the color supplies the drama while the tailoring keeps it readable. British GQ notes that Leto later said his expression at the Gucci show was not about the coat, a reminder not to mistake a photograph’s facial expression for a verdict on the clothes.

2. The checked Gucci suit
At GQ’s 2017 Men of the Year Awards, Leto wore a checked suit with embellished lapels. The check is already assertive; the lapel detail adds a second focal point without turning the whole outfit into a prop. It is a strong example of his ability to make formalwear feel deliberately unconventional.
3. The 2018 Met Gala’s “Heavenly Bodies” look
For the Met Gala theme “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” Leto wore a custom Gucci look. The event offered a clear reason for the outfit’s heightened, ceremonial feel: the theatricality was in conversation with the night’s theme rather than arriving without context.
4. The white monochrome Grammys outfit
A white, head-to-toe look is a more restrained counterpoint to Leto’s elaborate Gucci costumes. Its appeal lies in committing to one visual idea and letting the silhouette carry it, rather than piling on competing colors and accessories.
5. The gold-trimmed 1970s-inspired suit
Gold-trimmed tailoring brings a retro, rock-star sensibility without abandoning the familiar structure of a suit. For viewers who like Leto’s flamboyance but want a look that still reads as formalwear, this is one of the more wearable directions in his wardrobe.

6. The 2022 Met Gala matching look with Alessandro Michele
Leto and Gucci designer Alessandro Michele arrived in coordinated cream embroidered tuxedos, red satin bow ties, gloves and matching crystal hair clips. Vogue called it one of the evening’s most charming red-carpet moments. Asked to define the pairing, the two answered, “Double trouble”—a playful explanation that fits the deliberate twinning. Vogue’s account of the 2022 Met Gala looks describes the details.
7. Electric-blue metallic trousers on the Monolith tour
Vogue’s tour diary documents Leto’s flamboyant Gucci-associated stage wardrobe, including electric-blue metallic trousers in Burriana on August 3, 2019. The reflective color and shine make sense under concert lighting: these are clothes built to become part of the show, not everyday trousers with an unexpectedly loud finish.
8. Custom lace gloves onstage
At a Monolith tour date in Cluj on July 21, 2019, Leto wore custom fingerless lace gloves. The detail is theatrical, but onstage it helps build a complete visual character alongside the metallic trousers, iridescent blouses and bejeweled accessories Vogue records in its Monolith tour diary.
9. Purple shirt, glittering trousers and lace cape
British GQ’s gallery highlights Leto performing in a purple shirt, glittering trousers, a lace cape, diamanté gloves and dark glasses. It is an extravagant combination, but its setting is the point: the outfit amplifies a performance rather than pretending to be understated red-carpet dressing.

10. The 2019 Met Gala’s ruby-red Gucci look
The ruby-red, floor-length embellished Gucci outfit at the 2019 Met Gala paired high-impact color and elaborate detail with the night’s camp sensibility. The replica of Leto’s own head, which he carried as an accessory, is impossible to separate from the moment’s fame—but the clothing itself still makes a striking case for committing fully to a look.
Ten looks that may prompt second-hand embarrassment
These are not documented regrets. In his 2021 British GQ interview, Leto said no specific past outfit came to mind when asked about regrets. The list instead points to choices whose literalness, silhouette or theatrical scale may strike some viewers as funny or uncomfortable.
1. Carrying a replica of his own head
The 2019 Met Gala accessory is the clearest contender for comic excess: Leto carried a replica of his own head alongside a ruby-red Gucci ensemble. British GQ calls the moment iconic, and the camp theme helps explain the choice; still, the image of someone carrying their own face across a red carpet is difficult to treat as ordinary styling. GQ also covered the headpiece in its report on Leto’s Gucci costumes.
2. The Choupette cat costume
At the 2023 Met Gala, whose dress code honored Karl Lagerfeld, Leto arrived in a full feline costume modeled on Lagerfeld’s cat, Choupette. The costume’s elaborate literalness made the entrance an instant joke as well as a fashion moment: Nick Jonas quipped, “Jared Leto showed up as a furry.” GQ’s account of the costume records the context and the reaction.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
3. The necklace-as-shirt look
British GQ describes a look in which Leto replaced a shirt at a classic black-tie event with a shimmering necklace. The joke is built into the styling: it takes the exposed-chest red-carpet formula and turns the accessory into the entire top half of the outfit. Some will read it as daring; others may find the gap between black-tie expectations and the barely-there garment awkward.
4. The high-fashion muumuu
A flowing muumuu can read as comfort-first loungewear, which makes its appearance in a high-fashion context an easy source of visual comedy. British GQ compares Leto’s version to Homer Simpson’s muumuu, while Vogue’s tour diary quotes Leto calling the garment “the most comfortable item of clothing ever invented.” The contrast is the appeal—and, for some, the embarrassment.
5. The full stage-cape combination
A lace cape, diamanté gloves, glittering trousers and dark glasses can look overworked away from the stage. In performance, those elements are part of a deliberate character; in a still image, the accumulation may feel closer to costume than clothing. British GQ’s selected looks include this kind of onstage styling, and Vogue’s tour coverage makes clear that the wardrobe belongs to a live-show setting.
6. Metallic trousers as a whole outfit’s main event
Metallic trousers are effective at catching stage light, but outside a concert their reflective finish can dominate every other detail. The electric-blue pair Vogue identified at the 2019 Burriana show is a strong example of the trade-off: excellent visibility for a performance, less subtlety for anyone expecting conventional trousers.

7. Iridescent blouse, bejeweled accessories and more
Vogue’s Monolith tour diary also describes iridescent blouses and bejeweled sunglasses and ties. Each can work as a stage accent; gathered together, they risk making the outfit feel like a collection of separate effects competing for attention. That maximalism is part of Leto’s performance wardrobe, but it will not suit viewers who prefer one focal point.
8. The lace gloves under the spotlight
Custom fingerless lace gloves are an expressive detail onstage, where they can help establish a persona from a distance. In a less theatrical setting, the combination of delicate lace and fingerless construction can feel fussy or costume-like. Their awkwardness depends on context as much as the accessory itself.
9. Embellishment on top of a loud checked suit
The checked Gucci suit with embellished lapels earns a place among the best for its confidence, but it also sits close to the line that divides bold from busy. A loud pattern and sparkling trim make two strong demands on the eye at once; a viewer who prefers quieter tailoring may find the combination too much.
10. The 1970s suit at maximum volume
Gold-trimmed, 1970s-inspired tailoring has a clear retro-rock appeal, but that same reference can tip into dress-up when the trim and silhouette are pushed too far. It is a matter of taste, not a fashion crime: the look succeeds for viewers who want a performance-minded rock-star image and may embarrass those who want a suit to disappear into the occasion.

Leto’s fashion is most legible when the clothes are judged by their purpose. A sparkling cape or metallic trouser can look excessive at a conventional event, yet coherent under concert lights; a Met Gala costume can be judged as a response to a theme rather than as ordinary formalwear. His 2019 replica-head look and 2023 cat costume make that tension especially visible: both turn the entrance itself into part of the outfit.
That does not mean every bold choice lands for every viewer. Leto has described style as “a lot more than what someone is wearing,” and his wardrobe makes the case that mood, persona and occasion shape the result. For a deeper look at his own approach, see his British GQ interview.
