Janne Puhakka, a former Finnish elite hockey player who publicly came out as gay in 2019, was killed at age 29 in Espoo on 13 October 2024. His former partner, Rolf Nordmo, admitted shooting him but denied the charge of murder. A district court convicted Nordmo and sentenced him to life imprisonment in April 2025; that judgment was under appeal in the latest located report, dated 23 September 2026.
How did Janne Puhakka die?
Puhakka was found dead at his former shared home in Henttaa, Espoo, on Sunday 13 October 2024. Police said he had been shot twice with a hunting shotgun. They said they believed the couple’s recent breakup was the motive. Those were police statements during the investigation, not a final court finding about motive. Yle reported the police account on 5 November 2024.
At that stage, Detective Inspector Matti Högman, the lead investigator, said: “The suspect denies any planning. I will not comment on any other details.”
What did Rolf Nordmo admit, and what did he deny?
Nordmo, Puhakka’s former partner, admitted shooting him during police questioning. He denied planning the act and later denied that he was guilty of murder. The distinction matters: he admitted the shooting, not the legal offense of murder. Yle’s coverage of the investigation and trial reported the charge and the positions taken by prosecutors and Nordmo.

After the preliminary investigation was completed in February 2025, prosecutors charged Nordmo with murder. At trial in March, they alleged the killing was planned and especially cruel. Yle’s trial coverage explained that Finnish law permits a murder charge where a killing is intentional or especially brutal or cruel; this is a description of the legal framing in that reporting, not legal advice.
Was Nordmo convicted, and is the conviction final?
District court judgment
On 1 April 2025, Western Uusimaa District Court convicted Nordmo of murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The court found that he shot Puhakka twice and repeatedly struck him in the head with the shotgun barrel. Yle reported that the court considered the act brutal but did not find it especially cruel or premeditated under the relevant legal assessment. It also ordered Nordmo to pay more than €60,000 in compensation to family members. The prosecutor decided not to appeal; Nordmo did. Yle’s report on the judgment gives the court’s findings and sentence.

The appeal was therefore still pending in that report; it did not establish a final appellate outcome. Seiska’s 23 September 2026 report is the latest located update on that proceeding.
Who was Janne Puhakka?
Puhakka played for Espoo Blues in Finland’s top division during the 2015–16 season and later played in France.
