Rice explained the brand name in the announcement: “The name Amber & Opal reflects the richness and diversity of our whiskey and community.” The founders have also presented the whiskey as an approachable entry point for people curious about whiskey, while aiming to offer something distinctive to experienced drinkers. A Taste Radio interview page from July 2025 describes that newcomer-to-enthusiast positioning. “Approachable” and “distinctive” are the founders’ positioning, not independently measured consumer outcomes.
What does Amber & Opal taste like?
The available descriptions point to a rye whiskey with honey, smoky black tea and wild botanicals, alongside the brand’s named cinnamon, ginger and fig finishing notes. The sources do not establish an independent tasting consensus, so it is more accurate to describe these as the brand’s ingredients and flavor notes than to promise a particular taste experience.

The brand suggests serving it neat, over ice or in cocktails. iHeart reported two cocktail concepts: Whiskito, Ja Rule’s coquito-style holiday drink made with the whiskey, and Amber Rush, the brand’s take on a Gold Rush. Ja Rule said the Amber Rush uses agave syrup rather than simple syrup because the whiskey already contains honey. The interview excerpt does not provide full recipe measurements.
When did it come out?
The July 2024 announcement said Amber & Opal would become available beginning in Winter 2024. On February 4, 2025, iHeart reported that it was “finally in stores now.” Together, those sources document the announced release window and a later report of retail arrival, but they do not establish an exact launch date.

The official Amber & Opal site currently directs buyers to Seelbach’s for the Honey Botanical Whiskey. Virginia ABC also has a product listing, but a listing does not establish stock at every store. Check the retailer’s live page for current price and inventory, and confirm that it ships to your address and that local alcohol-sale rules permit the purchase.
A Total Wine search result observed in 2026 showed a 750 ml bottle at $69.99, but the retailer page could not be verified directly. Treat that figure as a provisional listing snapshot, not a current or nationwide price; check the retailer’s live listing before relying on it.
