James MacArthur died in Florida on October 28, 2010, at age 72. Contemporary reports described the cause as natural causes, but no specific medical cause was disclosed. He was best known as Detective Danny “Danno” Williams on the original Hawaii Five-0, a role he played from 1968 to 1979.
James MacArthur’s death and reported cause
The Television Academy and the Los Angeles Times reported that MacArthur died in Florida of natural causes. CBS News, citing his agent Richard Lewis, also used the description “natural causes” and stated that no direct cause was specified. The reports do not establish a particular illness or medical explanation.
His signature role on the original Hawaii Five-0
MacArthur played Detective Danny “Danno” Williams, the assistant to Detective Steve McGarrett, on CBS’s crime drama set in Honolulu. His tenure ran from 1968 to 1979. The series itself aired from 1968 through 1980, so MacArthur left before its final season.
McGarrett’s command “Book ’em, Danno” became closely associated with the two characters. In a 2007 interview with the Bradenton Herald, as quoted by the Los Angeles Times, MacArthur said: “He said ‘book him’ to others in the cast, but I guess he said it to me the most.”

From a prominent family to a varied acting career
Born in Los Angeles on December 8, 1937, MacArthur was the adopted son of actress Helen Hayes and playwright and screenwriter Charles MacArthur. Among his film roles was Disney’s Swiss Family Robinson. He also attended Harvard before leaving to pursue film work. His career reached a defining chapter with Hawaii Five-0, but it extended well beyond the character who made him familiar to television audiences.
