James Gunn’s reported answer does not settle Ezra Miller’s future as The Flash. In an October 1, 2026 report, The Direct said Gunn replied “No” when asked whether Matthew Lillard was playing Barry Allen in Man of Tomorrow. That denial addresses one casting rumor; it is not confirmation of Miller’s return, a replacement Flash, or a new Flash project.
What did James Gunn say about the DCU’s Flash?
The Direct reported on October 1, 2026, that Gunn responded “No” to a fan asking whether Matthew Lillard was playing Barry Allen in Man of Tomorrow. Because the exchange is relayed by the outlet rather than independently established here from the original social-media post, the wording should be attributed to The Direct’s account. The Direct’s report also says DCU Flash casting had not been officially introduced at that time.
The answer is narrow: it rejects the Lillard rumor about Man of Tomorrow. It does not identify who will play the DCU’s Flash, or whether that character will appear in the film.
Does this confirm Ezra Miller’s return—or a new actor?
No. The October report does not resolve Miller’s future, announce a replacement, or establish that DC has made a casting decision. It also does not announce a standalone DCU Flash project. The most accurate takeaway is that the cited update leaves those questions open.

Miller starred in The Flash (2023), a film from the outgoing DCEU era. The subsequent DCU is a separate continuity, so Miller’s earlier role alone does not confirm that he will reprise Barry Allen in it. In 2023, DC co-chair Peter Safran said the studio was supportive of Miller’s recovery and that a conversation about a path forward would happen when Miller felt ready; that was a statement at the time, not a later casting announcement. TheWrap’s January 2023 report also quoted Gunn praising the film, but that historical praise does not answer who will play the DCU Flash.
What about Grant Gustin and earlier development comments?
Grant Gustin
Gustin’s name has also circulated in fan speculation. ComingSoon reported on September 14, 2026, that Gunn responded humorously to speculation about Gustin returning as the DCU Flash; the exchange was not a casting confirmation. ComingSoon’s report therefore does not establish Gustin as the actor, just as the later Lillard denial does not establish a different one.

Script and casting comments
In a report dated January 17, 2026, ComicBook.com said Gunn had described holding Flash development until there was a complete, viable script and delaying casting until a completed script existed. Those are comments reported earlier in 2026, not proof that development remained unchanged after that date. Read ComicBook.com’s report.

The 2023 The Flash belongs to the earlier DCEU-era slate; it should not be treated as evidence of the new DCU’s casting or continuity. TIME’s June 2023 overview described the film as a late DCEU entry and explained Gunn’s plan for the connected DCU to begin from a reset point. TIME’s explainer provides that background, but it predates the current casting reports.

Gunn made the continuity distinction explicit when discussing the Justice League cameo at the end of Peacemaker season one. TVLine quoted him in December 2024 saying those heroes “don’t exist yet” in the new DCU. That remark concerns the cameo and continuity, not a specific decision about Miller or the next Flash actor. TVLine’s interview coverage gives the context.
