James Gunn says the DC Universe’s overarching story could take “like a decade, maybe a little less,” but he stresses that the plan is “very loose.” The broad narrative points are meant to hold together; individual projects and details can change, and a project is not guaranteed just because it appeared in an earlier slate.
What Gunn means by a “loose” decade-long plan
In remarks from the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast reported by GamesRadar, Gunn described a continuing story whose broad direction remains while its details shift. “So the pinpoints are the same, but some of the specifics have changed,” he said, as reported by the outlet.
That distinction matters: the decade is an approximate horizon for the overarching narrative, not a fixed production calendar or promise that every announced project will reach screens. Gunn said that some projects do not work and that he will not greenlight one without a screenplay he loves. His account supports a flexible story framework, not a complete public list of everything planned for the future.
How the plan compares with the original DCU announcement
The long-range idea is not new. In January 2023, Gunn and Peter Safran presented the first slate as much of Chapter One, “Gods and Monsters,” within an eight-to-ten-year plan. The Associated Press described that slate as five films and five series. Gunn’s later comments add emphasis on flexibility rather than announcing a wholly new timetable.

| Public framing | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 announcement | An eight-to-ten-year connected-story plan and an initial slate of five films and five series, as reported by The Associated Press. | That every project would be made exactly as announced or that the release schedule was fixed. |
| Gunn’s later description | A broad story with enduring “pinpoints” and specifics that can change, as reported by GamesRadar. | A final slate, a guaranteed completion date, or a full account of the story’s future projects. |
| WBD shareholder letter, August 2025 | Warner Bros. Discovery still called the DC universe a “10-year vision” and named then-upcoming projects including Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Clayface, a new Wonder Woman project, and Lanterns in its Q2 2025 shareholder letter. | A current release schedule: the letter is a dated corporate snapshot, not confirmation of present-day dates or project status. |
What “connected” means—and where Elseworlds fits
In a January 2023 interview with DC, Gunn said that projects beginning with the first one would be canon and connected. He also distinguished the main DCU from Elseworlds, allowing separate stories to exist outside the shared continuity.
Connection does not require every project to look or feel alike. Gunn said choices about film or television depend on a story’s complexity, tone, and whether it needs a feature-length treatment or multiple hours. He described creator expression and varied project tones as part of the model, saying, “Everything doesn’t always look the same. Everything doesn’t always have the same expression.” He also put it plainly: “This is not the Gunnverse.”

Gunn’s reported comments describe a story beginning in Superman, continuing in Peacemaker, moving into the next Superman movie, and carrying on through subsequent films. They do not disclose every future project or confirm that all items from the 2023 slate remain active. The 2025 shareholder letter offers a dated list of projects WBD was highlighting at that point, not a definitive map of the eventual story.
For readers interested in one named adaptation, the AP reported that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based on Tom King’s comics. The comic is an optional way to explore the source material; the film’s place in a changing slate does not make the book a prerequisite for understanding the broader DCU.
