James Gunn has described his Superman as drawing on decades of comics rather than adapting one book: he singled out All-Star Superman for its visual influence, while also praising Birthright and John Byrne’s run. His broader DC Studios plan, as he and Peter Safran described it in 2023, pairs a connected DCU with Elseworlds stories and room for distinct creative styles. The next announced Superman film is Man of Tomorrow, which the Associated Press reported was set for July 9, 2027.
What interview does the title refer to?
The available identification points to a July 2025 post-release episode of Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. The Superman Homepage recap describes a 52-minute, spoiler-filled conversation about casting, cut material and the DCU’s future: Superman Homepage’s interview recap. The exact title wording has not been independently matched to an original article page, so the recap is best treated as the likely interview rather than definitive confirmation of the title’s source.
Which comics influenced Gunn’s Superman?
In a DC interview published July 10, 2025, Gunn named several strands of Superman’s comic history. He said, “I love Birthright a lot,” and also praised John Byrne’s Superman run and Grant Morrison’s New 52 Superman. He spoke as well about reading the early comics by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and older Superman stories from the 1940s and 1950s. These are influences he identified, not a list of books the film directly adapts. Read Gunn’s interview with DC.
All-Star Superman shaped the film’s visual language
Gunn gave All-Star Superman, by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, particular credit for the production’s look and design. “We had Frank Quitely’s art everywhere in the production room,” he said. Gunn added that Jamie Grant’s coloring inspired the movie’s palette, and connected Quitely’s work to the design of Superman’s computer and robots. He called Quitely “probably the single most important creative force influence on us, besides Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.”

That makes All-Star Superman the most clearly identified visual reference in Gunn’s account. Readers looking to explore the influences can start there; Birthright and Byrne’s run are other comics Gunn said he likes. His comments establish their relevance to his thinking, not that any one is required reading or a scene-by-scene blueprint.
How did Gunn describe the DCU’s structure?
In a January 31, 2023 DC interview, Gunn and co-chief Peter Safran described a connected slate of films and series alongside Elseworlds stories outside the central continuity. They said the story should determine whether an idea works best as a film or television project, and argued that individual projects should be allowed different looks, feels and tones. Gunn summarized the distinction with the phrase, “This is not the Gunnverse.” Read the 2023 DC Studios interview.

Those remarks explain the approach the pair announced at the time; they do not establish that every project since then followed the original plan or that every announced project remains in development. The model they described has three useful dimensions: whether a story belongs to the main DCU or Elseworlds, whether its form suits film or television, and how much its creative tone differs from other projects in the shared setting.
What did Gunn say about Superman’s moral center?
Gunn has framed Clark’s morality as a choice Clark makes, rather than something imposed by an outside authority. In a post-release interview with Rolling Stone, he described the film’s themes this way: “It’s about being loving, being kind, and how that compassion is really the answer to everything.” Read the Rolling Stone interview.

Spoiler warning: That interview also discusses plot details, including the Jor-El and Lara storyline and the squirrel-rescue scene. The interview recap’s question about a possible connection to Byrne’s depiction of Krypton concerns a plot twist; it should not be mistaken for confirmation that the film adapts that comic.
