James Gunn described it as a relapse into old behavior. Steve Agee’s character is part of the episode’s surveillance storyline, but the available TV Insider interview attributes the scene’s explanation to Gunn, not Agee.
Why does Peacemaker take part in the orgy?
In “The Ties That Grind,” Chris is rejected by Emilia Harcourt and the Justice Gang. He returns home and falls into destructive habits, using sex, drugs, and alcohol to avoid confronting how badly the rejection has affected him.
Gunn told TV Insider, “It’s a truthful moment where Peacemaker is relapsing… sort of falling back into old behaviors because he’s not getting what he wants.” The scene makes visible behavior that Chris had previously discussed as part of his past: rather than leaving that pattern in off-screen exposition, the premiere shows him acting it out.
How does the scene connect to the alternate dimension?
The orgy sits between two emotional pressures on Chris. In his own world, Harcourt and the Justice Gang have turned him away. In another dimension, his father and brother are alive, offering a glimpse of the family life he did not have. After the orgy, Chris returns through the dimensional door and reconnects with that alternate family.

Gunn told TheWrap that the story is not a conventional multiverse spectacle: “It’s not really a multiverse. It’s really one other dimension that is parallel to our own world — and it’s much more contemplative.” The contrast gives the relapse a broader context: Chris is coping destructively in the present while being drawn toward the possibility of a different, more complete family life.
What does Steve Agee’s role have to do with it?
Agee plays John Economos, Chris’s friend and an A.R.G.U.S. agent. In the premiere, Economos is tasked with surveilling Chris amid concern about dimensional rifts, placing him in the episode’s parallel plot. But the TV Insider interview identifies Gunn as the person explaining the orgy’s character meaning; it does not establish that Agee personally gave that interpretation.

Where does the scene fall in the premiere?
“The Ties That Grind” is season two’s first episode. Its sequence of events links the rejection, Chris’s relapse, and his return to the alternate dimension. The premiere also shifts the team’s name from the Justice League cameo in season one to the Justice Gang. Warner Bros. Discovery’s pressroom lists season two as an eight-episode season that premiered August 21 at 9 p.m.; that is the historical premiere information, not a statement about current streaming availability.
