No actor has been officially announced as the next James Bond. As of August 9, 2026, Amazon MGM’s search is underway, auditions have reportedly begun, and further screen tests have been reported for August. The original “big decision” update, however, dates from November 2024, when Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson said the new Bond would be a man, likely in his 30s, potentially of any race, and expected to commit to at least a decade of films. Those comments were broad expectations from the former Bond custodians—not a current Amazon MGM casting notice or confirmed contract.
The situation has changed substantially since then. Amazon MGM gained creative control of the franchise in March 2025, while Broccoli and Wilson remained co-owners but stepped back from producing the films. Denis Villeneuve is directing the next chapter, Steven Knight is writing it, and the publicly reported casting process is now moving toward screen tests.
What the “It’s a big decision” Bond update actually said
Barbara Broccoli described the choice of Daniel Craig’s successor as “a big decision” during a November 2024 interview with the Associated Press. Michael G. Wilson explained why: every time a new actor takes over, that performer changes the direction and identity of the Bond films.
That was the significance of the update. It did not reveal a selected actor, a shortlist, an audition notice, or a completed contract. Broccoli and Wilson were outlining the kind of commitment they believed the next 007 would require after Craig’s five-film run ended with No Time to Die in 2021. Read the Associated Press report.

The four conditions discussed in 2024
- Bond would be played by a man. This was the clearest gender condition expressed by Broccoli and Wilson.
- He would likely be in his 30s. The wording indicated a likely age profile, not a formal upper or lower age limit.
- He would not necessarily have to be white. The comments indicated that whiteness was not a given. That expressed openness to a nonwhite actor; it did not confirm that the eventual Bond would be nonwhite.
- He would be expected to make a long-term commitment. Broccoli and Wilson discussed at least a decade’s worth of Bond films. That does not mean ten films were promised, ordered, or written into a ten-film contract.
These points should therefore be read as the 2024 Eon-era view of the role. They were not published as a formal casting brief, and Amazon MGM has not repeated all four conditions in its current updates.
Why choosing the next Bond is unusually difficult
The 007 role is a franchise decision rather than a normal one-film casting decision. The actor becomes the face of an entire cinematic era, often for years or even decades. The choice affects the films’ tone, the way Bond relates to romance and violence, the character’s level of humor or vulnerability, and the audience’s expectations of the series.
A long commitment adds practical complications. A candidate must be able to handle:
- Years of physical preparation, action work, reshoots, and potentially demanding location shoots.
- Sequels, international publicity, press obligations, and the scheduling demands of a global theatrical franchise.
- The possibility that Bond will become the role most strongly associated with the actor’s career.
- The need to remain convincing as a spy, fighter, seducer, professional, and emotionally complicated character over a prolonged period.
Age is part of that calculation. A performer in his 30s could offer the longevity needed for a new era, while an older performer might bring greater authority and lived-in danger. The challenge is finding someone young enough to sustain the role but mature enough to make audiences believe he is an experienced intelligence officer. “Likely in his 30s” was consequently a strategic preference, not simply a casting statistic.

Craig’s casting illustrates why the decision attracts so much attention. His selection initially faced backlash from some Bond fans, but that reaction changed after Casino Royale and the wider success of his interpretation. The next actor will not need to imitate Craig. In fact, the franchise will need a performer with a distinct identity rather than a repeat of the previous era.
Are the 2024 conditions still the rules?
Not officially. The four conditions remain important historical evidence of what Broccoli and Wilson were looking for before the change in control, but they should not be presented as Amazon MGM’s current public rules.
In its May 2026 update, Amazon MGM confirmed that “the search for the next James Bond is underway” but declined to provide specific casting details. That means the evidence supports the following distinctions:
- Male: A condition publicly stated by Broccoli and Wilson in 2024, but not newly restated by Amazon.
- In his 30s: A likely profile or preference, not a confirmed age range or eligibility cutoff.
- Any race: The 2024 comments indicated that Bond did not necessarily have to be white. They did not announce a nonwhite casting decision.
- At least a decade: A desire for a long-term franchise commitment, not confirmation of ten films or a ten-film contract.
Race and nationality should also not be conflated. The 2024 comments concerned whether the actor had to be white. They did not establish that any nationality could play Bond, and Amazon has not publicly clarified how it views the character’s British identity in the new film.

The major change: Amazon now controls Bond’s creative direction
On March 24, 2025, Amazon MGM’s joint venture with Broccoli and Wilson closed. Under the arrangement, Amazon MGM gained creative control of the James Bond franchise, while Broccoli and Wilson remained co-owners of the intellectual property but stepped back from producing the films. Amazon’s announcement explains the agreement.
This is the most important context missing from many reports that repeat the 2024 “big decision” story. It is no longer accurate to write as though Broccoli alone is selecting Craig’s replacement under the old production structure. The next film is being developed in the Amazon era, although it remains part of the established James Bond franchise rather than a formally announced reboot with a new title or release date.
Amazon’s official language calls the film the next “chapter.” It has not announced the official title, detailed plot, release date, or the identity of the new 007.
Bond 26’s confirmed and reported creative team
The next film—commonly called Bond 26 as shorthand, not as an announced official title—has a significant creative team in place:

Amazon MGM announced Villeneuve as director in 2025, followed by the appointment of Knight as screenwriter on July 31, 2025. Pascal and Heyman are producing, with Lapointe executive producing. See Amazon’s Villeneuve announcement and its announcement of Knight.
Villeneuve’s involvement matters because the choice of Bond must fit both the performer and the filmmaker’s ambitions. Knight’s script will establish the dramatic version of Bond that the actor has to inhabit. But neither the director nor the writer has publicly confirmed who will play 007 or exactly what period of Bond’s life the film will depict.
Latest casting status: auditions have started, but nobody has been announced
Amazon MGM officially said on May 14, 2026, that the search was underway. The next day, Variety reported that auditions had begun and that Nina Gold was leading the casting process. Gold’s credits include Game of Thrones, The Crown, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Martian, Les Misérables, and Conclave. Read Amazon’s May 2026 update and Variety’s report on the auditions.
Further reporting from The Independent, citing Deadline, said more screen tests were expected in August 2026. The same report said Villeneuve had been contacting actors directly, while Gold had been meeting lesser-known performers to decide whether they should enter the wider pool. The names invited to the next round were not disclosed. Read the report.

The most defensible interpretation is that the search is moving from broad meetings and early auditions toward more focused camera testing. That does not prove that a final shortlist exists. An audition, a screen test, and an offer are separate stages:
- Meeting or general audition: The production assesses whether an actor might fit the role.
- Screen test: The performer is filmed in scenes, often to assess presence, chemistry, physicality, and how he reads as Bond on camera.
- Final consideration: A smaller group may be compared alongside scheduling, contractual, and creative considerations.
- Offer and announcement: The studio and actor still have to reach an agreement before the casting is official.
Which actors have actually been linked to the process?
Reports have mentioned numerous possible candidates, but they do not all have the same evidentiary status. Treating every rumored name as a finalist is one of the easiest ways to misread Bond casting coverage.
Reportedly auditioned: Tom Francis
Variety reported that Tom Francis, a 26-year-old British actor, had auditioned for Bond. Francis is known primarily for stage work, including Sunset Boulevard. His reported audition makes him the clearest publicly identified participant in the process, but it does not make him a frontrunner, finalist, or recipient of an offer.
His reported involvement is notable because it aligns with the possibility that the production is looking beyond the most obvious established stars. Still, one audition is not evidence that Amazon has chosen him. Variety’s report on Francis is the relevant source for that distinction.
Rumored or discussed by the media
The names that have circulated as possible contenders include:
- Callum Turner
- Jacob Elordi
- Harris Dickinson
- Aaron Taylor-Johnson
These actors have been associated with Bond speculation or entertainment reporting, but the available reports do not establish that Amazon has confirmed them as finalists. A media “frontrunner” label can refer to anything from genuine industry information to repeated fan and press speculation. It should not be treated as proof of an audition or offer. Variety and The Independent both make clear that the publicly reported names are not an official Amazon shortlist.
Reportedly not involved: Cosmo Jarvis
Cosmo Jarvis belongs in a separate category. His representative reportedly told Variety that he was not in the mix and was not auditioning. That clears up one rumor, but it offers no evidence about who will ultimately be cast. Radio Times reported the representative’s statement.
Does the new Bond have to be an unknown actor?
There is evidence that the production may be open to emerging performers, but there is no official Amazon rule excluding established stars.

Debbie McWilliams, the former Bond casting director who worked on 13 films and cast Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig, said the next Bond should come “completely out of the blue.” Her argument was that too much familiarity with an actor’s private life can damage the mystery surrounding the character. Read McWilliams’s comments in The Independent.
McWilliams’s view is valuable industry context, not a current casting policy. She is retired, and Nina Gold is reportedly handling the present search. The reported auditions involving Francis and Gold’s meetings with lesser-known actors are consistent with an openness to less-exposed talent, but they do not prove that Amazon has ruled out recognizable actors.
The official 007 site’s background on the casting process also emphasizes qualities such as confidence, naturalness, unexpectedness, and the transformation that can occur when an actor is placed in Bond’s physical and visual context. See the official 007 casting-process feature.
What the production may be weighing
Although Amazon has not published a complete casting brief, the demands of the role make several considerations unavoidable:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Consideration | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Long-term availability | The actor may need to accommodate sequels, reshoots, publicity, training, and international production over many years. |
| Action credibility | Bond must look capable of fighting, shooting, surviving dangerous situations, and functioning as a professional spy. |
| Dramatic range | The performer must handle romance, humor, menace, elegance, grief, vulnerability, and authority. |
| Mystery | An actor who is not excessively overexposed may preserve more of Bond’s enigma, although this is not an absolute rule. |
| Distinct identity | The new Bond needs to establish a new era rather than reproduce Craig, Brosnan, Dalton, Moore, Lazenby, or Connery. |
| Global appeal | The performer must carry an internationally marketed theatrical franchise. |
| Fit with the filmmakers | The actor must suit Villeneuve’s visual and tonal direction and Knight’s screenplay. |
This is why an apparently suitable actor can still be rejected. Physical appearance alone cannot answer whether someone can sustain Bond’s humor, danger, emotional restraint, and public presence across a long franchise commitment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Bond 26 an origin story?
That remains unconfirmed. Euronews reported that unnamed sources suggested Knight’s screenplay might draw heavily on Ian Fleming’s earliest novels and could depict Bond before he achieved “00” status. Amazon has not announced an origin story, a prequel, or a direct adaptation of a particular Fleming novel. Read the Euronews report.
The accurate formulation is that some reporting has suggested a story about Bond’s early career, but no official synopsis confirms it. The film should not be described as an origin narrative until Amazon MGM provides that information.

- The identity of the next Bond actor.
- A final shortlist or finalist group.
- A formal age range.
- A minimum number of films.
- A ten-film contract or decade-long signed agreement.
- The actor’s race, nationality, or final interpretation of Bond’s British identity.
- The official title of the film.
- A release date.
- A confirmed plot or origin-story format.
- Whether any rumored actor has received an offer.
Reports may continue to point toward an announcement by the end of 2026. Amy Pascal’s “good bet” comment makes that a reasonable reported timetable, but it is not a guarantee. Casting announcements can move when screen tests, negotiations, schedules, or creative decisions change.
The bottom line on the new 007 casting conditions
The 2024 update revealed the scale of the decision, not the identity of the actor. Broccoli and Wilson said the next Bond was expected to be a man, probably in his 30s, not necessarily white, and willing to commit to a long period of films. Those statements explain the kind of career and franchise calculation involved, but they should not be mistaken for binding Amazon MGM rules.
The current reality is that Amazon controls the creative direction, Villeneuve and Knight are developing the next film, auditions have reportedly begun, Tom Francis is the clearest publicly reported audition participant, and an end-of-2026 announcement is only a target. Until Amazon MGM officially names the actor, every supposed frontrunner remains unconfirmed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Has the next James Bond actor been cast?
No. As of August 9, 2026, Amazon MGM has not officially announced Craig’s successor. Auditions and reported screen tests are underway, but an audition or rumored shortlist is not the same as a casting announcement.
Recommended Free Tools
Does the new Bond have to be in his 30s?
Not according to any publicly issued Amazon MGM rule. Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson said in November 2024 that the actor would likely be in his 30s. That was a reported preference, not a confirmed age cutoff.
Does a decade-long commitment mean ten James Bond movies?
No. The 2024 comments referred to at least a decade’s worth of films as a long-term commitment. They did not confirm ten movies, a ten-film contract, or a particular release schedule.
Is Bond 26 confirmed to be an origin story?
No. Reports have suggested that Steven Knight’s script might explore Bond before he became a 00 agent, but Amazon has not confirmed an origin story, prequel, or adaptation of a specific Ian Fleming novel.
Who is reportedly involved in casting Bond 26?
Nina Gold is reportedly leading the casting process. Tom Francis has reportedly auditioned, while names including Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Harris Dickinson, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson have circulated as rumored possibilities. None has been confirmed by Amazon MGM as the new Bond or as a finalist.
The Bottom Line
The 2024 “big decision” story described the desired long-term shape of the next Bond role; it did not announce the next 007. Amazon MGM now has creative control, auditions have begun, and a casting announcement by the end of 2026 is only a reported target. Until the studio makes an official announcement, the actor, release date, title, and story remain unconfirmed.
