His band’s work joined the railway town’s social life to a wider circuit of performances across colonial India. The story is known chiefly through memories shared by Evangelista’s sons, Robert and Jim, and those recollections also trace the family’s difficult return to the Philippines after independence.
Who was Joaquin “Ivan” Evangelista?
Evangelista was a violinist from Candaba, Pampanga, in the Philippines. Fernandes’s 2015 Scroll.in feature reports that he arrived in India with a band in 1924 and stayed until after Indian independence. The account is not a fully independently corroborated biography: it draws substantially on recollections Robert and Jim Evangelista shared after Robert contacted Fernandes with questions about Filipino bands in India.
That distinction matters. The family testimony provides intimate details about work and displacement, while some particulars of Evangelista’s career remain uncertain. For example, the feature describes his possible membership in Bombay’s Filipino Syncomusic Orchestra as likely, not established. It does not document his complete discography or confirm his band membership in every city.
Why Jamalpur mattered to working musicians
A railway town with a social center
Jamalpur, in present-day Bihar’s Munger district, was organized around the East Indian Railway workshop. Scroll.in’s 2015 feature puts the workshop’s employment at approximately 25,000 people. The railway community included employees and their families, and its Railway Institute offered a place to gather for recreation and dances.

Writing about an earlier period, Rudyard Kipling evoked the Institute’s social atmosphere: “Best and prettiest of the many good and pretty things in Jamalpur is the institute on a Saturday when the Volunteer Band is playing and the tennis courts are full and the babydom of Jamalpur – fat, sturdy children – frolic round the band-stand.” His description predates Evangelista’s reported years in town, but it conveys the Institute’s role as a community gathering place.
A base on a wider performance circuit
Fernandes places Evangelista in Jamalpur from 1938. Jim recalled that his father’s band played there on Fridays and traveled along the railway line for gigs during the rest of the week. The railway therefore shaped the musicians’ working life in two complementary ways: the workshop supported a large local community, while the rail network connected Jamalpur to other potential performance stops.

The family’s life was not confined to one town. The feature names Lucknow, Bombay, Calcutta, and Jamalpur among the children’s birthplaces. It does not establish precise dates for every move, so those place names suggest a mobile family life rather than a complete itinerary.
Filipino musicians in India’s popular-music scene
Evangelista’s story sits within a broader history of Asian musicians performing Western popular music. Fernandes’s feature says about 20 Filipino musicians were performing in India during the 1920s, and mentions Filipino bandleader Jimmie Little’s 1927 engagements in cities including Delhi, Lahore, and Mussoorie. It also identifies trombonist Nick Ampier in a 1926 recording by Lequime’s Grand Hotel Orchestra. These are contextual details presented through the feature’s synthesis and reported references; they should not be treated as a complete census or independently verified discography.

Why the family returned to the Philippines
According to Robert, gigs became scarce after Indian independence, and the family returned to the Philippines. In Robert’s account, the move was a harsh transition for his mother and siblings: they faced poverty, language barriers, and culture shock in a country they had not known as home. Those personal consequences are family recollections reported by Fernandes, not independently established measures of the family’s circumstances.
Robert reflected on the strain his father may have faced: “He must have swallowed his pride in order for his family to live.” He also wrote of Evangelista’s years on the road: “I must believe that my dad had lived the good life playing gigs all across India (you know what I mean) It was hard for him, I bet.” The contrast is central to the family’s story: a musician who worked across India, followed by an uncertain return when that performance market contracted.

What the account can—and cannot—establish
Fernandes’s feature is valuable as reported family history, particularly for the memories Robert and Jim contributed. It gives a compelling outline of Evangelista’s route from the Philippines to Indian railway towns and back, but it does not settle every biographical detail. The later Taj Mahal Foxtrot republication repeats much of the Scroll.in account, so it is not independent corroboration.
For broader context on the railway town rather than a biography of Evangelista, G.S.P. Rao’s Jamalpur: The Town the British Built is a history of Jamalpur’s railway settlement and social life. Goodreads lists a 158-page Kindle edition published September 27, 2018; it is contextual reading, not a source for the musician’s career.
