They evaded authorities for 11 days before a pursuit ended in Indiana: Casey was captured, and Vicky died after suffering a gunshot wound that reporting described as self-inflicted. Casey later pleaded guilty to escape and received a life sentence. Netflix’s documentary Jailbreak: Love on the Run recounts the case.
How did Casey White escape?
Vicky White had worked at Lauderdale County Detention Center in Florence, Alabama, for 17 years. Casey White was serving a 75-year sentence for earlier convictions and had been returned to the county jail while awaiting proceedings in a separate 2015 murder case. That separate case should not be confused with the escape conviction; the cited accounts describe it as a pending matter, not a conviction. TIME’s account of the case provides this background.
On April 29, 2022, Vicky said she was taking Casey to the courthouse for a mental-health evaluation. According to Netflix Tudum’s account, no evaluation had been scheduled. The pair did not return, triggering a multistate search. Reporting describes their relationship as romantic, a central part of the story told in the documentary.
What happened during the 11-day search?
Authorities caught up with the pair in Indiana 11 days after the escape. The pursuit ended in a crash, and Casey was taken into custody. Vicky had a gunshot wound and later died. Netflix Tudum and TIME describe the wound as self-inflicted; that wording reflects the accounts cited here, rather than a separately reviewed coroner’s report.
Netflix’s documentary also considers Vicky’s private life and the contrast between her role at the jail and the escape. Executive producer Rachel Stockman framed her story as one in which “how trapped she felt” and “how little her co-workers knew about her private life” were surprising. That is Stockman’s interpretation of the story, not an independently established explanation of Vicky’s motives. Netflix Tudum also quotes former inmate Tyler Purser describing her this way: “She treated everybody like they were somebody.”
What happened to Casey White after his capture?
In May 2023, Casey pleaded guilty to first-degree escape. ABC News reported that the plea agreement included a life sentence and dismissal of the felony-murder charge concerning Vicky’s death. Alabama Public Radio reported his life sentence in June 2023. ABC News and Alabama Public Radio cover the plea and sentence.

The escape case is distinct from the separate Connie Ridgeway murder case. TIME reported in 2023 that prosecution in the Ridgeway case had been suspended. That is a dated report, not a current court-record update, and it does not establish a conviction for Ridgeway’s murder.
