Video from a livestream showed him looking at his phone before the car skidded on the wet road and struck a barrier, according to contemporary reports. The footage is historical, and the original Kick stream was reported as deleted.
What happened in the crash?
Miami New Times reported that footage showed Doherty looking down at his phone before accelerating, losing control on the wet roadway and hitting a guardrail. MotorTrend also reported that the car skidded into a barrier. These are accounts of the video and reporting, not an independent crash reconstruction.
The crash happened on the southbound Turnpike in Miami-Dade County. The stream drew attention because it captured the incident as it unfolded; the original stream was later reported as deleted from Kick. Doherty subsequently posted an aftermath clip in which he said he and his passenger were okay.
Was Doherty cited after the crash?
Miami New Times reported on October 8, 2024, that Florida Highway Patrol cited Doherty for operating a wireless handheld device after video became available. The outlet quoted a passage it attributed to the crash report: “Upon video footage of [Doherty] driving while operating a wireless handheld device becoming available just days after the accident, the driver was cited for that traffic violation,” the report states.
