For a starting playlist, hear J.D. Souther’s co-writes in Eagles recordings such as “Best of My Love” and “New Kid in Town,” Linda Ronstadt’s versions of songs from his catalog, and Souther’s solo hit “You’re Only Lonely.” The listening guide below separates songwriter from performer: a song Souther wrote may be most familiar in another artist’s recording.

Hear Souther revisit the songs himself
Natural History (2011) offers Souther’s later performances of several songs discussed here, including “Best of My Love,” “New Kid in Town,” “Faithless Love,” and “Prisoner in Disguise,” as well as “Sad Café.” These are his later re-recordings; they are not the original Eagles or Ronstadt recordings. How to compare the recordings
When moving between versions, note who is performing, whether Souther wrote or co-wrote the song, and whether you are hearing an original recording or one of Souther’s later revisits. That distinction makes the three listening contexts clear: Eagles band hits, Ronstadt’s recordings from his catalogue, and Souther’s solo or duet performances.
