It’s What’s Inside is a twisty, anxious party thriller about a group of friends, a body-swapping device and the secrets that surface when they trade places. It has horror-style tension, but writer-director Greg Jardin described it as “a sci-fi thriller with jokes,” while Netflix classifies it as a mix of thriller, dark comedy and science fiction. The guide below stays spoiler-free until a clearly marked ending explanation.
What is It’s What’s Inside about?
A group of friends reunites for a pre-wedding party. The gathering takes a strange turn when an estranged friend arrives with a suitcase containing a device that lets people swap bodies. The group tries it as a game, but the changes expose concealed desires, grudges and insecurities—and push the party toward danger.
The device is the hook; the people are the point. The tensions among the friends give the premise its momentum, as each new identity makes it harder to know who is speaking, what they want or whether they can be trusted. Netflix’s film page offers the official synopsis and cast information.
Is it really a horror movie?
Horror is a reasonable expectation from the title’s “trippy horror movie” framing and the film’s unsettling atmosphere, but it is not how Jardin describes the project. In a Netflix Tudum interview, he said, “We never considered it horror,” calling it “a sci-fi thriller with jokes.” Netflix’s genre description blends thriller, dark comedy and science fiction.

Expect unease, deception and escalating stakes, but also a playful streak rather than unrelenting grimness. Jardin said he wanted viewers to feel the way an anxious person feels, using jittery editing and music to bring that perspective to the screen. He described the anxiety as enjoyable “in a fun way,” like the fear of a haunted house.
Who made it, and who is in the cast?
Greg Jardin wrote and directed the film; Netflix describes it as his feature debut. It premiered in the Midnight section at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, according to Netflix’s acquisition announcement.

The body swaps make the cast list more than a set of character introductions: performers begin playing identities other than the people they were introduced as. That shifting performance is part of the film’s central puzzle.
How to watch without getting lost
Don’t expect the film to pause and neatly explain every switch. Jardin has said he made a diagram of eight people’s heads, with names showing who occupied each body. The confusion is intentional, but a few viewing habits can make the game easier to follow:

- Track the body separately from the person whose identity is speaking. A familiar face does not guarantee the character is in their own body.
- Pay attention to what each person knows, wants and remembers—not just who appears on screen.
- Notice the relationships as well as the mechanics. The device gives hidden motives room to surface; the conflict is about old resentments and desire as much as the swaps themselves.

Beatrice escapes in Nikki’s body, taking the device and Dennis’s money. Shelby and Cyrus return to their own bodies. Cyrus is jailed after Dennis, while in Cyrus’s body, reports him for the deaths. The last exchange between Shelby and Cyrus gives Shelby the final word in a relationship marked by an earlier imbalance of power.
