The result is a brisk, deliberately disorienting sci-fi thriller whose shifting identities are often more compelling than the explanations behind them. Its ensemble and visual play keep the puzzle lively, though viewers who want every rule laid out cleanly may find the confusion part of the point.
What is It’s What’s Inside about?
Greg Jardin’s 2024 U.S. feature begins at a pre-wedding gathering. An estranged friend arrives with a suitcase containing a device that can make people swap bodies. The group treats it as a game; old grudges, private desires and competing versions of events quickly make that game dangerous.
The setup is best approached without a detailed explanation of the device or the later turns. The film’s central question is not just who is in whose body, but what happens when people are given a chance to perform as someone else—and when their friends may not know who they are addressing.
Netflix released the film in the United States on October 4, 2024. Netflix Tudum lists its runtime as 1 hour 45 minutes and its rating as R; ratings and streaming availability can vary by region. Netflix’s Media Center provides the official release and premise details, while Tudum’s guide lists the runtime, rating and cast.

Do the body-swap rules make the story easy to follow?
The film gives viewers enough structure to understand that bodies and identities can be separated, but it does not turn the device into a tidy science-fiction system with a long instruction manual. That choice preserves momentum and lets the group’s reactions carry much of the explanation. It also means attention matters: scenes can become a test of tracking who is speaking, who is being addressed and what each character believes.
That uncertainty can work as suspense. A line or gesture may read differently once the audience understands the current arrangement, and the social consequences matter more than technical detail. At the same time, the film’s puzzle can feel intentionally slippery rather than perfectly legible. Viewers who enjoy reconstructing an ensemble’s shifting alliances are likely to find that a feature; anyone seeking a strictly rule-driven mystery may find it a limitation.
How well does the ensemble sell the shifting identities?
The cast gives the crowded setup useful anchors. Brittany O’Grady plays Shelby, James Morosini plays Cyrus, Alycia Debnam-Carey plays Nikki, Devon Terrell plays Reuben, Gavin Leatherwood plays Dennis, Reina Hardesty plays Brooke, Nina Bloomgarden plays Maya and David Thompson plays Forbes, according to Netflix Tudum.

In a body-swap story, performers have to suggest both the person whose body is visible and the person whose identity is meant to be present. The ensemble format makes this a central pleasure: the characters’ relationships and attitudes provide clues when appearances stop being reliable. The film is less interested in pausing for a neat roll call than in letting behavior and reactions do the work, which suits its party-game energy but can add to the tracking challenge.
Do the thriller, comedy and science fiction fit together?
They fit best when the humor grows out of the premise: the awkwardness of inhabiting someone else’s body, the social performance of a reunion, and the sudden change in what a familiar relationship means. The comedy gives the film room to be playful before suspicion takes over, while the thriller structure turns the same game into a source of pressure.
Director Greg Jardin described the movie to Netflix Tudum as “a sci-fi thriller with jokes.” TIME reported that Jardin said the idea began as “a straight-up sci-fi comedy” before he leaned toward a darker but still funny tone. That progression is visible in the film’s balance: it does not settle into pure comedy or an austere puzzle, and its tonal shifts are part of its identity. Jardin has also said, as reported by Tudum, that the team never considered it horror; that is his description of the creative intent, not a rule viewers must accept about how tense the film feels.

Do the visuals help clarify the puzzle?
The film’s visual choices and editing are part of how it communicates the swaps. Rather than relying only on dialogue to label every change, it uses presentation and performance to keep identity in play. Those choices give scenes a stylized, game-like quality and support the feeling that the audience is piecing things together alongside the characters.
They do not eliminate ambiguity. The visual approach enhances the mood and the sense of instability more consistently than it serves as a simple reference chart. The film asks viewers to follow expression, context and relationships as well as the mechanics, so the design is most satisfying when treated as part of the storytelling rather than a guarantee that every transition will be instantly obvious.

Netflix classifies the film among thriller, dark-comedy and sci-fi material, and its title page also uses labels including psychological, ensemble, mind-game, suspense and mystery. Jardin’s account to Tudum is that the team never considered it horror. Those descriptions point to a film built around tension and unease, but one whose core appeal is its social mind game and darkly comic premise rather than a conventional horror setup.

Does the ending pay off the setup?
Spoiler warning: the next section discusses the ending.
The ending’s job is to turn the body-swap game into a reckoning with what the characters have wanted and concealed. Its revelations are designed to reframe earlier behavior, not simply to provide a final technical explanation of the device. That approach suits a story where identity, trust and performance matter more than a hard-science account of how the suitcase works.
The payoff is strongest for viewers willing to accept some unresolved slipperiness in favor of a sharp final shift in perspective. Those who expect every motive and mechanical detail to be spelled out may find the conclusion less conclusive than the setup’s puzzle-like structure suggests. Who should watch it?
It’s What’s Inside is a good fit for viewers who like contained ensemble thrillers, dark comedy and stories that make character relationships part of the puzzle. Its 105-minute runtime keeps the scenario moving, and its shifting performances give the premise energy. It is less suited to anyone who wants a transparent set of rules or an entirely straight-faced thriller.
For a documentary-focused audience, the main appeal is not factual subject matter but a high-concept fictional scenario that turns a reunion into a study of how people present themselves to one another. The film’s most distinctive idea is also its most demanding: following the swaps is part of watching, not a task the story removes for you.
