In an October 2018 interview, Star Trek: Discovery actor Mary Wiseman described a busy moment for Sylvia Tilly: the character was central to Discovery, took the lead in the Short Treks episode “Runaway,” and appeared in Discovery-era content for Star Trek Online. Wiseman’s comments capture what she hoped those stories would reveal about Tilly at the time—not what later seasons ultimately made of her.
Why Tilly seemed to be everywhere in 2018
James Whitbrook’s interview with Wiseman, published by io9 and republished by Gizmodo on October 8, 2018, took its playful “Star Trek galaxy” framing from Tilly’s reach across several formats. She was a character in Star Trek: Discovery, the focus of “Runaway,” a new installment of the short-form companion series Short Treks, and part of the game Star Trek Online’s Discovery-era story content. Read the interview at Gizmodo.
That range mattered to Wiseman because it let audiences encounter Tilly in different ways. The television performance relied heavily on physical mannerisms; voicing a younger, Academy-era Tilly for the game meant translating the character without those physical elements. Wiseman said she was not a major gamer, but welcomed the chance to reach another part of the fanbase.
Wiseman’s 2018 hopes for Tilly’s growth
Wiseman described Tilly’s story as a continuing process of becoming more independent. In “Runaway,” Tilly would meet someone new, try to help, and find unexpected common ground. Wiseman also expected the character to be more on her own, making moral choices by consulting her own compass. These were Wiseman’s expectations for the story as it was then forthcoming.

She saw Tilly’s entry into the command training program as a major step toward a long-held ambition: the first rung on a ladder Tilly had wanted to climb throughout her life. The interview presents that training as important to Tilly’s future in 2018, rather than as a summary of what later seasons did with the character.
From Tilly to Captain Killy
Wiseman also discussed playing Captain Killy, Tilly’s Mirror Universe counterpart. She singled out the bridge and comms scene as a favorite, praising both the writing and director Jonathan Frakes. For Wiseman, that scene reflected an important part of the franchise’s identity: Star Trek could combine humor with philosophy and action.

That tonal mix suits Tilly, whose exuberance can make a strong first impression. Wiseman said audiences might initially find her “a lot,” but hoped they would come to see her as a fully rounded person. As she put it: “People are more than their first impressions. And even if someone seems like a lot, or seems this way or that way, it doesn’t mean they’re not a three-dimensional person, with a real life.”

The interview is most useful as a record of Wiseman’s perspective in 2018: how she understood Tilly’s emerging independence, what the character’s command aspirations meant to her, and how performing for a game differed from acting on camera. It also announced a November 2018 Blu-ray and DVD release for Star Trek: Discovery season one. That is a historical release announcement, not confirmation of present-day stock or availability.
