Spoilers for the Season 1 finale. Pennywise tells Marge that she will become Richie Tozier’s mother—and that Richie and his friends will help bring about its death. The revelation suggests It experiences time in a nonlinear way, but the finale does not spell out a complete set of rules for changing the past. In the present-day crisis, the group uses the cosmic-rock dagger to restore the cage and trap Pennywise in Derry again. A Juniper Hill coda brings back Sophia Lillis as Beverly Marsh, linking Ingrid Kersh’s story to the older Mrs. Kersh in It: Chapter Two.
What Pennywise reveals to Marge
During the confrontation, Pennywise isolates Marge and tells her she will become Richie Tozier’s mother. It says Richie and his friends will be responsible for its death, then threatens Marge in an apparent attempt to stop that future from happening. The dialogue makes Richie’s connection to the future Losers Club explicit; the larger idea that Pennywise can rewrite history is an implication, not a fully explained ability.
The revelation gives the series’ reverse chronology a disturbing purpose. The story is not only showing earlier cycles of violence in Derry: Pennywise appears to know about events that, from a human perspective, have not yet occurred. In its December 14, 2025 interview with TheWrap, creator and finale director Andy Muschietti described the novel’s brief speculation about how It experiences time as mysterious, with no single answer. He said that ambiguity gave the series room to imagine a story unfolding in reverse.
How the group traps It again
The immediate danger begins when the military removes one of the pillars that helps keep It confined to Derry. The children’s key to restoring the barrier is a dagger Lilly recovered, made from the same cosmic rock as the pillars. Taking it from its place of origin creates a dangerous obstacle, but the group’s plan succeeds: Rich’s spirit helps his friends complete the task, and Pennywise is contained in Derry again. TIME’s finale explanation details the confrontation and its connection to the films.

This resolves the escape threat, not the question of whether Pennywise can change earlier events. The finale raises the possibility that It might try to prevent the Losers Club from defeating it, but the accounts from the creators do not establish a precise mechanism or confirm that history can be altered. TIME also points to an unresolved causal question: why target Marge rather than another future Loser’s ancestor? The episode’s threat is clear; the broader logic is not settled.
Who appears in the Juniper Hill coda?
Sophia Lillis returns as Beverly Marsh in the Juniper Hill coda, where she encounters the older Ingrid Kersh, played by Joan Gregson. The scene connects Ingrid’s story in the series to the elderly Mrs. Kersh seen in It: Chapter Two. It is a continuity bridge and a callback to the Losers—not an explanation of Pennywise’s relationship with time.
