The big death is Rich Santos—not Richie Tozier. Rich dies saving Marge in the Black Spot fire, while the finale reveals that Marge will grow up to be Richie Tozier’s mother. Pennywise warns her that her future child and his friends will be involved in its death.
Who dies in Welcome to Derry?
Rich Santos, played by Arian S. Cartaya, dies during the Black Spot fire in episode 7. He is one of the children in the show’s 1962 group, and he dies while saving Marge. The creators have described Rich as a deliberately tragic choice: Andy Muschietti said, “Rich is like this character that is so pure and innocent and so full of life.” The loss is made more affecting by Rich’s relationship with Marge.
The finale brings Rich back as a spirit who helps his friends trap Pennywise, and shows him at his own memorial. That return gives the character an emotional role in the ending; it does not reverse his death. (See TV Guide’s finale explanation and TheWrap’s account of the Black Spot fire.)
How is Marge connected to Richie Tozier?
The finale confirms that Marge will become Richie Tozier’s mother. Richie is the future member of the Losers’ Club familiar from the It films. This is an intentional prequel-to-film connection, not just a fan theory. Andy Muschietti told TVLine, “But the other thing you mentioned, which is Marge being Richie’s mom — that’s the first idea that I had.” He described imagining a funny girl with “Coke bottle glasses”; Barbara Muschietti said the reveal was meant to come at the end. (TVLine’s creator interview discusses the reveal.)
#1 Best Overall
Rich Santos and Richie Tozier are separate characters, from different generations. The show establishes that Rich dies saving Marge and that Marge will later have Richie. It does not establish that Marge names her son after Rich. Reading the names as a tribute is an understandable interpretation, but it is not confirmed in the cited creator interviews.
What Pennywise’s warning means—and what it does not prove
Pennywise tells Marge that the child she will have, and that child’s friends, will bring about its death. The threat turns the family reveal into a warning about the future: Marge’s son will be part of the group that eventually confronts Pennywise.

The show makes Pennywise’s nonlinear perception of time central to the prequel’s premise. But the warning does not fully explain how that perception works. Andy Muschietti has left open whether Pennywise can travel into the past and change events. The finale therefore points toward the creature’s knowledge of the future without establishing a definitive time-travel mechanism, a fixed causal loop, or the rules by which the past could be altered. It: Welcome to Derry is a prequel to the 2017 and 2019 films, based on Stephen King’s novel. The Television Academy describes its story as beginning in 1962, 27 years before the first film’s events, and notes that the series expands on Derry history from King’s book. The Black Spot fire is one such expansion: the novel gives relatively little detail about the circumstances, and Muschietti told TheWrap that the series built out the event while aiming to respect the tragedy’s spirit.
