Spoilers through the Season 12 premiere: The Season 10 finale of Chicago Med suggested that Dean Archer might be the father of Hannah Asher’s baby, but it did not confirm it. Season 11 did: Archer is the father. That reveal turns a close friendship into a lasting co-parenting bond with romantic possibility. Whether that makes their romance “problematic” is a matter of interpretation; the show’s latest reported status is that they live together and co-parent, but have not decided whether they are a couple.
What the Season 10 finale actually revealed
In the Season 10 finale, “…Don’t You Cry,” Hannah goes to Archer’s home and tells him, “We need to talk.” The episode cuts between that visit and Mitch Ripley opening his door to Sadie, encouraging viewers to wonder whether Archer—not Hannah’s former partner Ripley—is the baby’s father. The scene was a deliberate tease, not proof.

Showrunner Allen MacDonald told TVLine, “I don’t think enough is said to legitimately say it’s a confirmation, but yes, it’s not lost on us that the audience will have that thought.” He also described Archer as someone Hannah trusts and as a stabilizing presence when she feels unsettled. TVLine’s finale interview explains the ambiguity; TV Insider’s recap covers why Ripley initially seemed a plausible answer.
Who is the father of Hannah’s baby?
Season 11’s premiere resolves the question: Archer is the father. MacDonald said the pregnancy began after the cut to black in “The Book of Archer,” rather than the Season 10 finale’s doorway scene proving it. Archer says he intends to be a father, but the revelation does not instantly turn their friendship into an established romance. CinemaBlend’s interview with MacDonald describes how the premiere clarified the timeline and paternity.

Why the twist changes the relationship
Ripley and Archer are not two equally current candidates once Season 11 answers the paternity question. Ripley was Hannah’s partner and the apparent assumption at the end of Season 10. Archer was the trusted colleague and friend whose connection with Hannah became permanent through their child. The twist changes the stakes: even if romance does not work out, they remain linked as Mabel’s parents.
That is also why “problematic” is an interpretation, not a settled verdict. Viewers may weigh their age difference, their history as colleagues, or the shift from friendship to romance differently. Those details can make the pairing complicated to watch, but they do not by themselves establish that the relationship is wrong. The more immediate uncertainty is mutuality: Archer has stated his feelings plainly, while Hannah’s feelings and intentions have not been defined in the same way.
What happened in the Season 11 finale?
After Hannah gives birth to Mabel, Archer tells her, “I love you, Hannah, and I have for a long time.” Hannah kisses him, but does not say that she loves him back. MacDonald told TVLine, “It was designed to be ambiguous,” adding, “They’re not quite on the same page, but the emotion is real and there is love there.”
Rank #2
Actor Jessy Schram offered her reading of Hannah’s feelings while leaving room for the character’s uncertainty: “I do believe that Hannah loves Dean,” she told TVLine. “I do believe that there is a love there. From this moment on, we get to explore what that love could possibly be, and I don’t even know if Hannah knows what that looks like.” The kiss is a meaningful step, not a clear declaration of a mutual relationship. TVLine’s Season 11 finale interview includes both perspectives.
Are Hannah and Archer together now?
As of the Season 12 premiere interview published October 7, 2026, Hannah and Archer are living together and co-parenting. MacDonald said they have “kind of ventured out of the friend zone into the romantic zone,” but “have not quite figured out who they are to each other” or whether they will have a relationship. So they are beyond an ordinary friendship, but the show has not confirmed them as a settled couple. TV Insider’s interview with MacDonald provides that latest status.
What “problematic” means for this pairing
The twist makes the relationship more consequential, not automatically more troubling. Hannah and Archer must navigate co-parenting regardless of whether their romantic connection lasts; their friendship, shared workplace history, age difference, and unevenly expressed feelings all give the story tensions to address. The evidence so far supports a complicated, still-developing relationship—not a final judgment about whether they belong together.
