The reports also had not announced Season 2 casting.
Season 2 is formally renewed, not just in development
HBO announced the renewal on August 17, 2026, according to TVLine and TV Insider; Variety reported it the following day. In the weeks before the announcement, co-creator Andy Muschietti said the writers’ room was active, but that was not itself confirmation of a renewal. On August 3, he told Variety, “We’re very excited, we’re in the writers’ room right now.”

Sarah Aubrey, head of original programming at HBO Max, said: “Together with Brad Caleb Kane, they will break new ground in Season 2, deepening the terror, the mystery, and the unforgettable Pennywise lore that fans love to devour.” The statement is reproduced by TVLine.
What Season 2 is about
A 1935 story built around the Bradley Gang
The new season shifts the action to Derry in 1935, during the Great Depression. Its announced premise follows bank robbers who stop in town to buy ammunition and encounter horror. The story draws on an interlude in Stephen King’s original novel, It, as described in Variety’s renewal report and TVLine’s coverage.

Brad Caleb Kane takes over as sole showrunner
Kane, who co-ran Season 1 with Jason Fuchs, is the sole showrunner for Season 2. Andy and Barbara Muschietti remain executive producers. Variety’s renewal report said Season 2 casting had not been announced.
When will Season 2 premiere?
No premiere date had been set in TV Insider’s August 17, 2026 report. HBO had not confirmed a release year in the cited coverage, so a projected year should not be treated as an announced date. The reporting establishes that Season 2 is renewed and has a stated setting and premise; it does not provide a schedule or cast list.

How the season fits the show’s backward timeline
Season 1 is mainly set in 1962; Season 2 moves 27 years earlier, to 1935. The creators have described a broader plan that would continue the story backward to 1908. In an August 3 Variety interview, Muschietti called it “a story told backwards.” That longer plan is not confirmation that HBO has renewed a third season: the cited renewal reports establish Season 2 only.
Muschietti also said the show would not leave out the period’s social and cultural context: “We’re not going to skip those.” His comments appear in Variety’s interview.
