Do you need a JioHotstar subscription?
Do not assume the series is free just because JioHotstar offers some free viewing. Access depends on the title’s current catalogue rights and the plan attached to your account. JioStar’s January 2026 plan announcement says Hollywood content is included in Super and Premium for new subscribers, while Mobile viewers can access Hollywood content through an add-on. The company separately described a ₹49-per-month HBO Max add-on when it announced the India launch; availability and eligibility may depend on your existing subscription and the offer shown at checkout.
These are JioStar’s announced prices for new subscribers, effective January 28, 2026. Existing subscribers may retain older plans and prices while auto-renewal remains active, and the current checkout screen is the best guide to what your account needs.

For a phone-only viewer, Mobile may have the lowest starting price, but confirm that the relevant Hollywood or HBO Max add-on is available for the account. Super is the straightforward option for new subscribers who want Hollywood content and access on up to two devices; Premium suits a household that needs up to four. Check device playback, any legacy-plan restrictions, and whether the app offers the subtitle, audio and download options you need.

What the series is about
The story is set in Derry in 1962, decades before the events of IT (2017). Rather than retelling the two films, it expands the story of the town and the recurring evil associated with it, exploring earlier manifestations and Derry’s history of violence. The setting and premise are described by Outlook India; the series is presented as an expansion of the film continuity based on Stephen King’s IT universe on OSN+.

“Pennywise’s origins” is useful shorthand, but it can suggest a straightforward human backstory. The series explores the entity’s mythology and Derry’s recurring horror; that phrasing should not be taken to mean it provides a complete explanation of every aspect of the supernatural creature.

Is Pennywise in the series, and is it connected to the films?
Bill Skarsgård returns as Pennywise, the clown form associated with the entity. The series also follows Derry’s residents, historical events and the wider evil connected to the town, so it is not structured as a Pennywise showcase in every episode.
IT: Welcome to Derry is a prequel to the 2017 film, not a remake of it or IT Chapter Two (2019). Viewers can begin with the series without having seen the films, but watching them first gives useful context for Derry, Pennywise and the town’s cyclical horror.
