The Season 1 finale of IT: Welcome to Derry reveals that Marge will grow up to become Richie Tozier’s mother. Pennywise learns of that future connection and tries to kill her, because Richie and the other Losers will eventually play a role in its defeat. The creators tie this twist to the way Pennywise experiences time, and they frame the reverse-chronology structure as a question about whether history can be rewritten.
This explainer covers what the finale establishes, what the creators say about the time premise, which mythology points are confirmed and which remain open, and what has been said about a second season. Spoilers follow.
What the finale establishes
Three points are explicit in the finale and in the creator interviews published December 14, 2025:
- Marge is Richie Tozier’s future mother. Pennywise draws attention to her future as a Tozier and to her son’s role in its death.
- Marge’s first love, Rich Santos, sacrifices himself to save her. Co-showrunner Jason Fuchs ties this loss to Richie’s name, describing the idea that Marge would name her son after Rich as part of the emotional logic of the reveal.
- The finale’s time logic is presented as a premise, not a rulebook. The show asks what it would mean for a creature that does not experience time linearly to act in the past.
Why Pennywise goes after Marge
Pennywise’s attack on Marge follows from what it knows about her future. If she becomes Richie’s mother, stopping her, or preventing the lineage from forming, would remove one of the people who later helps bring about its defeat. The finale therefore frames the attack as an attempt to interfere with the chain of events that leads to Pennywise’s end.

That is the story’s interpretation, not proof that Pennywise can reliably change history. The creators present the question of whether it can rewrite the past as open. Viewers who expect a settled set of rules for how Pennywise’s foresight works will not find one in the finale.
How Marge was built into the show
Andy Muschietti, creator and finale director, said that a character who would become Richie’s mother was his first idea for the series. In a separate interview, he recalled the process this way:
“The first character that was created in the show was Marge, and I did a little drawing of her with the coke bottles, and I knew from the beginning that she would end up with a patch.”

The creators held the reveal until late in the season and gave Marge traits that could echo Richie without making the link obvious. Fuchs described her as a hidden connection between the series’ characters and the film characters: she could be a Loser’s mother without a last name giving the game away early.

The show’s time idea starts with the novel. Muschietti points to a moment in Stephen King’s It where the Losers speculate about how It experiences time, and he stresses that the book gives no definitive answer. The series turns that ambiguity into its central premise: a creature outside ordinary linear time may know its own end and may try to change events that came before it.
Muschietti explained the reasoning behind the backward structure this way:

Why reverse the story at all
Barbara Muschietti said that time’s plasticity had long fascinated her and Andy, and that conversations about the familiar limitation of prequels helped push them toward reversing the usual perspective. A prequel normally has little suspense because audiences already know how the story ends. Telling it backward gives the earlier events stakes, since the viewer knows the creature survives into the films while the characters do not.

What the time premise does not settle
The finale does not offer a complete account of how Pennywise’s perception works. It also does not establish that every event in the films can be altered. The series uses the premise to ask questions and to make the earlier story matter; it does not fill the gaps King left.

Confirmed reveal and open mythology
The finale separates what the show has settled from what it leaves open. The table below summarizes the distinction.

Film connections in the finale
The Richie lineage is the main link to the films. The finale also includes a coda that jumps forward to 1988 and connects Beverly Marsh with Mrs. Kersh. According to TV Guide, that coda was added during pickup filming, after the main production had wrapped, because the creators wanted a more direct visual bridge to the films.
Coverage describes the character as the real Ingrid Kersh, distinct from the way later film material uses Mrs. Kersh’s appearance. TV Guide’s account explains how the scene relates to the films, and it is the place to check the details of that relationship.

The planned chronology and the renewal question
Andy Muschietti told TVLine that the creators began with a three-season concept built around three catastrophic events from the novel’s interludes, each set on a different date in the series:

Muschietti said the team wanted to tell a three-season event story, and Barbara Muschietti said they hoped to get the chance to make it. These are the creators’ stated plans, not a production schedule.
On the renewal question, TV Guide reported on December 14, 2025, that HBO had not announced a renewal. Barbara and Andy Muschietti cited the high quality bar and the cost of the show, while saying that everyone involved wanted to continue. Renewal status may have changed since then, so check HBO’s announcements for current information before relying on any statement about later seasons.
