It expands the mythology and film continuity established by Andy Muschietti’s IT and IT: Chapter Two while drawing on the history and atmosphere of Stephen King’s 1986 novel. Rather than retelling the films, the series looks backward at Derry’s recurring violence, fear, prejudice, and the supernatural force associated with Pennywise the Clown.
Season one premiered on HBO and HBO Max on October 26, 2025, and completed its weekly run with an eight-episode finale on December 14, 2025. A continuation was reportedly in development as of August 12, 2026, but HBO had not publicly confirmed a formal renewal, premiere date, or filming schedule in the official sources reviewed.
What is IT: Welcome to Derry about?
IT: Welcome to Derry is a supernatural-horror prequel set roughly 27 years before the principal 1980s period of the 2017 film IT. Its first season takes place in Derry, Maine, during 1962 and explores the town’s history before the events audiences saw in the two Muschietti-directed films.
HBO describes the series as a prequel that traces the origins of the murderous, shape-shifting entity known as Pennywise the Clown. That description should not be read as meaning the show is a direct adaptation of a previously published Pennywise origin story. The more accurate description is a franchise prequel and expansion of the IT mythology: it combines the world of King’s novel with the continuity and visual interpretation established by the films.

The central question is not simply “What new form will Pennywise take?” The larger subject is Derry itself: why violence and fear seem to recur there, how communities respond to cruelty, and how the supernatural terror connected with the town may operate across generations.
The series is therefore best approached as psychological and historical horror as well as a monster story. A review by Variety characterized the show as blending horror, history, race relations, and fear, with its opening set in January 1962. Those are critical interpretations rather than HBO’s official synopsis, but they describe the series’ broader ambitions more accurately than the phrase “Pennywise spin-off” does.
When and where is the series set?
Season one is set in Derry, Maine, in 1962. The period is important because the show is not merely using a retro aesthetic. It examines an earlier chapter in the town’s history, before the events of the 2017 film, and uses that setting to explore how social fear, prejudice, violence, and supernatural influence can reinforce one another.
Derry has always been more than a backdrop in the IT story. In King’s novel, the town’s history is interwoven with the central narrative, and the characters’ understanding of the evil they face develops alongside their investigation of Derry’s past. Welcome to Derry extends that idea in television form by making the town’s historical patterns a primary subject.
Readers should be careful with the distinction between King’s established Derry history and new material created for the series. The show is inspired by the novel and expands the film universe, but every event depicted in the 1962 storyline should not automatically be treated as a scene or fact taken directly from the book.
How does Welcome to Derry connect to the Stephen King novel?
Stephen King’s IT, published by Viking Press in September 1986, follows a group of adults who return to Derry after confronting an evil creature that preys on children. The novel moves between childhood and adulthood and devotes substantial attention to Derry’s history, its buried violence, and the way the town seems to absorb or normalize terrible events.

Welcome to Derry uses those foundations without simply adapting the novel’s main plot again. The publisher’s official tie-in description identifies the book as the basis for the two IT films and an inspiration for the HBO series. In practical terms, the novel is the best source-material companion for viewers who want to understand the town’s deeper mythology, but it is not necessary to watch season one.

Is it a prequel to the two IT movies?
Yes. HBO and Warner Bros. Television present the series as an expansion of the vision established by Andy Muschietti’s feature films, IT and IT: Chapter Two. It belongs to the same broad film continuity rather than serving as a replacement for, or a scene-by-scene retelling of, those movies.
The relationship can be summarized this way:
- Stephen King’s novel supplies the original Derry setting, central premise, historical framework, and supernatural foundation.
- IT (2017) adapts the childhood portion of the story in a modernized film continuity.
- IT: Chapter Two (2019) continues that film story into adulthood.
- IT: Welcome to Derry moves backward to 1962 and expands the history and mythology surrounding the town and Pennywise.
The two Muschietti films are useful companion viewing, but they are not presented as prerequisites for understanding the series. Fans who want to revisit the connected film continuity can look for the two Muschietti IT films or an IT movie collection on physical media. Edition, region, retailer stock, and included extras are subject to change.
Who created the series?
The series was developed for television by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs. Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane serve as co-showrunners. Andy Muschietti also directs multiple episodes.

HBO lists the following executive producers:
- Andy Muschietti
- Barbara Muschietti
- Jason Fuchs
- Brad Caleb Kane
- David Coatsworth
- Bill Skarsgård
- Shelley Meals
- Roy Lee
- Dan Lin
Bill Skarsgård’s involvement is particularly notable because he played Pennywise in the two Muschietti films. HBO’s production announcements also identified a creative and cast group including Jovan Adepo, Taylour Paige, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, and Kimberly Guerrero.
Cast and characters
The announced season-one cast includes Jovan Adepo, Taylour Paige, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, and Kimberly Guerrero. HBO’s official image archive also identifies season-one episode imagery featuring Stephen Rider, Kimberly Guerrero, Joshua Odjick, Jovan Adepo, Matilda Lawler, James Remar, Arian S. Cartaya, Blake Cameron James, and Glen Michael Grant.
Because the show’s appeal depends partly on discovering how its characters and historical events fit into Derry’s larger story, a spoiler-light introduction is more useful than listing every character’s arc. The ensemble places the human residents of Derry at the center, while Pennywise and the supernatural force connected to the town remain the franchise’s defining threat.
When did season one premiere?
HBO announced that season one premiered on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and was available to stream on HBO Max. The season contains eight episodes and was scheduled to release weekly through the December 14, 2025 finale.

There was one notable scheduling adjustment: HBO announced that episode two would receive an early HBO Max debut beginning October 31, 2025, for Halloween. That early availability did not change the season’s overall eight-episode structure.

HBO’s current series directory identifies Welcome to Derry as an HBO series and provides the most reliable starting point for current availability in supported markets.
Is there an official companion podcast?
Yes. HBO’s series directory lists an official companion podcast for IT: Welcome to Derry. It is a useful additional resource for viewers who want discussion and behind-the-scenes context alongside the episodes. Since a podcast is a listening resource rather than a physical product, it should not be confused with a streaming service or with an official audiobook edition of King’s novel.
Will there be a season two?
A second season had not received a formally announced HBO renewal or release date in the official sources reviewed as of August 12, 2026.

The franchise is built around a recurring cycle: Derry experiences periods of violence and terror, children encounter an evil that can take many forms, and the town’s adults often fail to confront what is happening. The novel presents that pattern through its nonlinear structure and extensive history; the films concentrate it into a two-part contemporary story; and Welcome to Derry moves the camera further into the past.

That makes the series less like an origin explanation with one simple answer and more like an investigation of the conditions that allow the mythology to persist. Pennywise is the most recognizable face of the evil, but the series’ historical setting gives equal weight to human fear, institutional silence, prejudice, and collective memory.
For that reason, viewers should not expect every mystery to be resolved as a piece of franchise trivia. Some details are inherited from King’s novel, some are shaped by the Muschietti film continuity, and others are television-original expansions. Keeping those categories separate is the best way to understand what the series is doing.Recommended viewing and reading order
- Read Stephen King’s IT if you want the deepest account of Derry and the source material behind the adaptations.
- Watch IT (2017) for the film version of the childhood storyline.
- Watch IT: Chapter Two (2019) for the continuation of that film continuity.
- Watch IT: Welcome to Derry as a historical prequel and mythology expansion set in 1962.
- Use the official companion podcast for additional series-related listening and production discussion.
You can also begin with Welcome to Derry if you are primarily interested in the town’s earlier history. The show is designed to stand as a prequel, although knowledge of the novel or films will make its franchise connections easier to recognize.
