Spoilers for Season 1, Episode 5. In “29 Neibolt Street,” the children’s search for Matty and the military’s hunt for the creature converge in the sewers. The boy who seems to have returned is a lure: he transforms into Pennywise and chases the children, while the episode also brings Hank’s connection to Ingrid Kersh into view and shows how the creature exploits Hallorann’s memories.
What happens in “29 Neibolt Street”?
Season 1, Episode 5 of IT: Welcome to Derry, titled “29 Neibolt Street,” aired November 23, 2025. The episode brings its two storylines—the children searching for Matty and the military operation aimed at the creature—into the sewer network beneath Neibolt Street.
The children follow a false return
The children are drawn underground by what appears to be Matty’s return. In the water, they encounter the bodies of Susie, Teddy, and Phil, and then Matty’s body. The Matty who had reunited with them was not who he seemed. He sings, changes into Pennywise, and pursues the group. Lilly becomes separated from the others during the chase.
The essential turn is that Matty’s apparent return is a trap. The reveal is the episode’s major Pennywise set piece, shifting the children’s search into a direct confrontation with the creature.

The military wants to control the creature
The military follows Dick Hallorann’s psychic access to Taniel as it pursues General Shaw’s plan to locate and contain the creature. Shaw tells Rose that a drug administered five years earlier restored his childhood memory of the Galloo. He believes the creature could be used to protect the United States.
Rose rejects the idea of putting it on a leash and has the star dagger associated with stopping it. Their disagreement makes clear that the operation is not simply a hunt: Shaw sees a potential weapon, while Rose opposes that goal.

Hank and Ingrid’s connection
Hank, wrongly accused of the earlier killings, is being transported to Shawshank when the bus is attacked. He finds Ingrid Kersh, who is revealed as his secret lover and a potential alibi. Her introduction of herself as Mrs. Kersh recalls the character in Beverly’s apartment scene in IT: Chapter Two.
The name is a deliberate franchise echo, but this episode does not establish whether Ingrid is the same person as the film character, a future version of her, or connected in some other way. The episode makes the association; it does not resolve the identity question.

Hallorann’s mental defenses weaken
Pennywise reaches Hallorann through memories of his grandfather and gets him to open his mental lock boxes. The episode therefore makes Hallorann’s psychic ability a vulnerability as well as a means of tracking the creature: the same access that helps the military pursue its target gives Pennywise a route into Hallorann’s mind.
Why Pennywise’s reveal comes at this point
The episode delays the full clown reveal while the story has already been hinting at the creature through other forms. Co-creator Andy Muschietti told TV Insider, “We decided to delay the introduction of Pennywise.” Co-creator Barbara Muschietti described Pennywise as the show’s “shark,” explaining: “You don’t want to allow the audience to become familiar with him. It loses its power, we believe. So it’s very important to be strategic about his appearance.”

That is the creators’ stated intention, not a guarantee that every viewer will find the timing effective. As a piece of episode structure, the delay lets the sewer sequence turn the children’s reunion with Matty into a reversal: the familiar face is the warning sign, not the safe return.

Jason Fuchs, the show’s co-showrunner, said the stories moving in separate lanes with the children and adults “have to start to converge.” The sewer sequence provides that point of intersection, bringing the children’s encounter and the military’s pursuit into the same setting without resolving every question around Shaw’s plan, Hallorann’s abilities, or the creature itself.

The convergence gives the episode a clear center: the children face Pennywise directly as the adults’ effort to find and control the creature closes in around them. The Hank and Ingrid material and Hallorann’s compromised defenses widen the consequences beyond the chase, while leaving the larger questions open.
