A joint statement from SAG-AFTRA and OpenAI acknowledged that Bryan Cranston’s voice and likeness appeared in some early outputs without his consent or compensation. OpenAI later described additional safeguards, and it announced a major licensing partnership with Disney. But none of that settles the legal questions—and Sora was discontinued on April 26, 2026, according to OpenAI.
What was the dispute between OpenAI and Hollywood?
The conflict was about who gets to control creative work and identity when a generative AI tool can make video from prompts. Studios objected to videos depicting recognizable copyrighted films, shows, and characters. Performers and their representatives raised concerns about voices and likenesses appearing without permission. Those concerns also led to questions about compensation, licensing, and whether people should have to opt out of use rather than opt in.
These are related but distinct issues. A studio’s interest in a copyrighted character is not the same as an actor’s interest in their voice or likeness, and one license does not automatically answer every rights question. Hollywood’s criticism of Sora 2 was not, by itself, a court ruling that OpenAI infringed anyone’s rights.
Why did studios and performers object to Sora 2?
The Motion Picture Association’s criticism
On October 6, 2025, the Motion Picture Association said Sora 2 lacked adequate safeguards against infringement. It asserted that videos infringing its member studios’ films, shows, and characters had proliferated on Sora and social media. That is the MPA’s public allegation, not an independently established measurement of the scale of infringement or a legal finding.

The Los Angeles Times framed the broader dispute as a fight over control of copyrighted images and likenesses, creator compensation, and OpenAI’s approach to allowing rights holders to opt out. The paper also reported OpenAI’s position that it intended to give actors and other public figures control over their likenesses. OpenAI’s stated intention and the MPA’s criticism represented competing views of whether the available approach provided meaningful control.
The Bryan Cranston example
A concrete instance emerged in a joint statement issued on October 20, 2025, by SAG-AFTRA, OpenAI, Cranston, and talent representatives. The statement said Cranston’s voice and likeness had been generated in some Sora 2 outputs during the initial invite-only release without his consent or compensation. It also said OpenAI expressed regret, strengthened guardrails, and maintained an opt-in policy for an individual’s voice or likeness.
“I was deeply concerned not just for myself, but for all performers whose work and identity can be misused in this way.”

Cranston’s statement describes the concern as he expressed it; the joint statement supplies the account of the early outputs and the subsequent response. SAG-AFTRA President Sean Astin put the union’s policy position plainly: “Simply put, opt-in protocols are the only way to do business and the NO FAKES Act will make us safer.” That is the union’s view of the appropriate standard, not a statement that a court had established that standard as law.

| Issue | Hollywood stakeholders’ concerns or position | OpenAI’s stated response or position |
|---|---|---|
| Consent and likenesses | SAG-AFTRA said Cranston’s voice and likeness appeared in early outputs without consent or compensation and argued for opt-in protocols. | The joint statement said OpenAI strengthened guardrails and maintained an opt-in policy for an individual’s voice or likeness. |
| Copyrighted works and characters | The MPA said Sora 2 lacked adequate anti-infringement safeguards and that infringing videos had proliferated. | OpenAI described safety controls and later announced a licensing agreement with Disney covering specified characters. |
| Control and compensation | The Los Angeles Times described concerns about who controls images and likenesses and how creators should be compensated. | OpenAI told the Los Angeles Times it was engaging with studios and rights holders and listening to feedback. |
| Safeguards and accountability | The MPA called for immediate action; SAG-AFTRA emphasized consent and opt-in protections. | OpenAI later listed provenance signals, consent-based controls, reporting, moderation, and restrictions involving public figures. |
The table captures public positions, not a settled legal test. In particular, a licensing deal for a defined set of characters is not evidence that all rights holders agreed to Sora’s use of their work, nor does it resolve performer consent or compensation across the service.
What safeguards did OpenAI say it had?
In a safety post published March 23, 2026, OpenAI described several measures for Sora. The company said it used C2PA metadata and other provenance signals; consent-based controls for characters; reporting and moderation; and restrictions involving public figures. Those are OpenAI’s descriptions of its controls. The available information does not establish that the safeguards eliminated misuse or independently measure how well they worked.

OpenAI’s vice president of media partnerships, Varun Shetty, told the Los Angeles Times: “We’re engaging directly with studios and rightsholders, listening to feedback, and learning from how people are using Sora 2.” That response indicates engagement, but it does not answer whether the safeguards met the standards that studios, performers, or other rights holders wanted.
What did the Disney agreement cover?
OpenAI and Disney announced a three-year licensing agreement that proposed allowing users to prompt content featuring more than 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars. In the announcement, OpenAI said Disney would make a $1 billion equity investment and receive warrants to purchase additional equity.

Those were announced terms and plans, not proof that every proposed feature launched or remained available. The deal showed that a major entertainment company was willing to pursue a structured licensing arrangement with OpenAI; it did not settle the wider dispute about works and likenesses outside the agreement’s stated scope.

What happened to Sora and the Disney plans?
OpenAI’s safety page says Sora was no longer available as of April 26, 2026. The Associated Press reported the shutdown and summarized concerns that included nonconsensual imagery and deepfakes. Disney said it valued the collaboration and what it learned, while saying it would continue engaging with AI platforms on ways to serve fans while respecting intellectual property and creators’ rights.
“We appreciate the constructive collaboration between our teams and what we learned from it, and we will continue to engage with AI platforms to find new ways to meet fans where they are while responsibly embracing new technologies that respect IP and the rights of creators.”
The shutdown means Sora is not currently available, according to OpenAI. The available material does not establish every contractual consequence of the shutdown for the announced Disney agreement, so it would be inaccurate to claim that the planned Sora features continued—or to assert a specific outcome for the contract.

Did a court find that OpenAI broke the law?
The sources documenting this dispute do not establish a final legal ruling resolving the specific Sora 2 copyright and likeness questions. The MPA’s criticism, SAG-AFTRA’s account of the Cranston incident, OpenAI’s statements about its policies, and the Disney licensing announcement all help explain the controversy, but they are not substitutes for an adjudicated finding.
The most supportable conclusion is narrower: Sora 2 faced serious, specific objections from film-industry representatives and performers’ advocates; OpenAI acknowledged a concrete early likeness incident in a joint statement and described changes to its controls; and the service was later discontinued. The record here does not prove that every criticism was legally established, that the safeguards resolved the concerns, or why any one factor determined Sora’s shutdown.
