Israeli Consul General in New York Ofir Akunis invited New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to a New York screening of a reported 47-minute film made by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) from footage recorded by Hamas attackers during the October 7, 2023 attack. Akunis framed the invitation as a way to challenge Mamdani’s criticism of Israel. Reports scheduled the screening for October 7, 2026, the attack’s third anniversary; they do not establish whether Mamdani accepted or attended.
What film was Mamdani invited to watch?
Contemporaneous reports say the film was produced by the IDF and compiled from footage recorded by Hamas attackers, including GoPro footage, during the October 7 attack. The reported runtime was 47 minutes. The screening was to take place in New York on October 7, 2026, three years after the attack. Israel National News reported the invitation and screening details, with corroborating details also appearing in The Jerusalem Post.
The reports reviewed do not establish a formal title for this particular film or indicate that it was available for public or consumer viewing. The description therefore identifies the film by its reported producer, footage, and runtime—not by a confirmed title.
Why did Akunis invite the mayor?
Akunis presented the invitation as a political challenge to Mamdani’s criticism of Israel, arguing that viewing the footage could help the mayor understand the attack and Israel’s position. That is Akunis’s framing, not an independently established effect of attending a screening.

In an open letter, Akunis wrote, as quoted by The Times of Israel in an October 6, 2026 live update: “With your rhetoric against the State of Israel being the fundamental reason for the rise of antisemitism in New York City, it is even more crucial now for the safety and continued existence of the Jewish homeland.” The assertion about the cause of antisemitism is Akunis’s claim; the reported invitation does not establish it.
Did Mamdani accept or attend?
The reports reviewed do not confirm whether Mamdani accepted, declined, or attended, and they do not include a response from him. The outcome remains unconfirmed in those accounts. They also do not provide the full invitation letter or an official consulate announcement, so details about the invitation come from news reports.

Is this the same film as October 7: Bearing Witness to the Massacre?

Its press page lists an October 3, 2025 release and streaming through Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, YouTube, and SalemNOW.
