Pankaj Sekhsaria’s Islands in Flux: The Andaman and Nicobar Story makes the case that the archipelago’s ecology, Indigenous communities, development and geology cannot be understood separately. It is a compilation of his writing on the islands over roughly two decades, and its argument for urgency rests on that linked view rather than on a single crisis. Read it as a consolidated historical and thematic account. For anything about conditions today, it needs to be paired with newer official data and current reporting.
What the book is
The book gathers Sekhsaria’s writings on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands into one volume. The author’s own book page describes its subject areas as environment, wildlife conservation, development and Indigenous communities. The collection is not a field report and is not a climate book in the narrow sense. Its value lies in showing how those subjects connect across the islands’ history.
Why a consolidated account was needed
Sekhsaria has said the motive was practical. In an interview with Nature inFocus published on 9 August 2017, he explained: “What motivated me was the need for a consolidated account of the islands, that could comprehensively cover a gamut of issues.” He describes successive administrators having to start from scratch each time they took up island questions. A single compiled account is a way to stop that loop, because the background on land, forests, settlement and Indigenous rights is in one place rather than scattered across old papers and reports.
The four threads that run through the book
In the same interview, Sekhsaria describes island life as a combination of intertwined community histories, ecological diversity and fragility, and geological and tectonic activity. Those strands are the backbone of the book, and each one changes how the others should be read.

Community histories
The islands’ human story is not one population with one history. Settlers, administrators, and Indigenous communities have shaped land use in different ways and for different reasons. Any policy choice about forests or coasts therefore lands on people with very different claims and vulnerabilities.
Ecological diversity and fragility
The archipelago’s biodiversity is part of why it is important, and the same features make it easy to damage. Sekhsaria’s treatment of wildlife conservation sits inside the wider development debate, not apart from it.

Geology and tectonic activity
Geological activity is the thread that most readers will not expect in a book about development. Treating the islands’ tectonic setting as a background fact, rather than as a hazard to be managed separately, is one of the book’s more distinctive moves. It means that planning decisions are never only about land use; they also sit on a landscape that changes.
The Jarawa and other Indigenous communities
The Jarawa and other Indigenous communities should be discussed as peoples with agency and specific histories. They are not scenery, and they are not a stand-in for every island resident. Coverage that treats them as a symbol of “pristine” nature, or that lumps them with settlers, misses the point of the book’s social argument.

Recent scholarship supports this framing. A 2026 article in the journal Contemporary South Asia studies Jarawa indigeneity in relation to Sekhsaria’s works and discusses development and climate pressures. Readers who want the detailed arguments should consult that article directly rather than relying on summaries.
What the 2017 date changes
The book is from 2017. Its best use is as a source for the debates it records, the historical sequence it lays out and the way its authors frame the issues. It is not a current inventory of the islands.

That matters for the word “urgently” in the title. The book makes a strong case that the linked issues need serious, joined-up attention. But whether a particular project, approval, species, forest area or coastline is in worse shape now is a separate question. Answer it with current primary material, such as government notifications, official environmental clearance records and published monitoring datasets, and check the dates on each.
- Official notifications and clearance records show what has been approved, and when.
- Monitoring datasets show measured conditions, and should state their survey period and method.
- Recent peer-reviewed work, such as the 2026 article above, shows how scholars are interpreting the situation now.
- The 2017 book shows how the debates were framed and what history led to them.
