No. YouTube is not dying, but the version built mainly around individual videos and mobile viewing is changing fast. Alphabet reported more than $60 billion in combined YouTube advertising and subscription revenue for 2025, while YouTube says its Shorts feed averages 200 billion daily views. Those figures point to a powerful business, not a collapsing one—but neither proves that every creator is thriving or every viewer is satisfied.
YouTube is becoming a broader media platform: part search engine, part short-video feed, part podcast and livestream destination, and increasingly a service watched on television. Its future depends on whether it can turn that reach into useful discovery and sustainable creator businesses while limiting spam, misinformation, and declining trust.
What would it mean for YouTube to be dying?
“Dying” is often used to describe several different problems. A platform can gain revenue while individual creators lose reach; it can remain culturally important while viewers spend less time on one format. A serious assessment separates the measures:
- Audience: Are fewer people using the service?
- Attention: Are viewers spending less time watching?
- Business: Are advertising and subscription revenues shrinking?
- Creator health: Can creators reach audiences and build reliable businesses?
- Relevance and product investment: Does the service still shape culture and develop new formats?
- Trust: Can viewers and advertisers rely on what they see and how it is moderated?
The available evidence is strongest on YouTube’s business scale and its strategic direction. It is less complete on creator-level earnings, user trends by demographic, and how revenue is divided among products. So growth at the company level should not be mistaken for universal success on the platform.

Is YouTube still financially strong?
Alphabet said YouTube generated more than $60 billion in combined advertising and subscription revenue during 2025. That is not an advertising-only figure. Alphabet’s 2025 annual filing separately reported that YouTube advertising revenue rose by $4.2 billion from 2024 to 2025. Alphabet’s 2025 fourth-quarter earnings call and annual filing provide the company’s reported figures.
Those numbers make “dying” an implausible description of YouTube’s financial position as of August 2026. They show a large business with advertising and subscriptions supporting continued investment across formats and devices. They do not disclose a complete breakdown of profitability by product, revenue per user by country, or creator earnings distribution. Nor do they show that an individual channel’s income is stable.
Why is YouTube moving onto television screens?
YouTube is competing for living-room viewing as well as phone-based attention. The company said television had become the primary device for YouTube viewing in the United States by watch time, and it has cited Nielsen rankings that place YouTube first in U.S. streaming watch time for nearly three years. These are claims about U.S. viewing time, not global user counts; YouTube’s 2025 strategy letter and 2026 strategy update describe the company’s position. Nielsen’s cross-media guide provides viewing context based on minutes, a metric distinct from unique users.
On a television, YouTube competes with Netflix, Disney+, traditional broadcasters, sports services, and other streaming apps. The screen also changes how people use the service: long videos, podcasts, livestreams, and family viewing fit naturally into longer sessions. YouTube is therefore becoming more television-like without ceasing to be a platform for creators and searchable videos.

What does Shorts’ growth tell us—and what doesn’t it?
YouTube says Shorts averages 200 billion daily views. That is a company-reported view-volume metric, not a count of unique viewers, watch hours, loyal fans, or creator earnings. Shorts gives YouTube a way to compete with TikTok and Instagram Reels while keeping rapid, vertical entertainment inside its own service.
The format can help creators reach people who might not find a long video through search, and Google-sponsored marketing research argues that Shorts can reach users who are not reached through TikTok or Reels. That is a claim from Google’s own research, not an independent measurement of all campaigns; see Google’s marketing analysis.
YouTube has also said that in some markets, including the United States, Shorts earns as much revenue per watch hour as traditional in-stream YouTube content. That company statement does not establish equal earnings for every creator or video. Format, geography, audience, eligibility, advertiser demand, and viewing behavior all matter.

For creators, it can be a discovery tool, but large view counts may not translate into long-form viewers, customers, memberships, or dependable income. A Shorts audience and a long-form audience are not automatically interchangeable.
Is long-form YouTube disappearing?
No. Long-form video remains suited to tutorials, education, reviews, documentaries, commentary, gaming, podcasts, livestreams, and other content that benefits from depth or sustained attention. YouTube’s 2026 strategy describes a mix of Shorts, longer programming, podcasts, live content, television viewing, and creator businesses—not a replacement of long videos with one short-form feed. Neal Mohan’s 2026 letter outlines that broader direction.
The shift is that long-form is no longer the only center of gravity. Shorts can introduce a creator or idea; a longer video can provide depth; a live stream can build participation; a podcast can earn extended listening time. On television, some videos also function more like scheduled or episodic programming.

For a creator, raw views alone are a poor measure of whether long-form is working. Use YouTube Studio to examine watch time, average view duration, returning viewers, search and suggested-video traffic, and—where relevant—revenue or conversions. The available analytics and interface can depend on channel eligibility and account rollout; YouTube documents its Studio reporting at YouTube Analytics.
Why can creators feel that YouTube is declining while the company grows?
Platform health and creator health are different questions. More total viewing and revenue can coexist with less predictable reach for a particular channel. Common pressures include:
- More competition: A mature platform has a large back catalog and a growing number of creators competing for limited viewer attention.
- Recommendation dependence: A change in what the system surfaces can affect a channel even when its production quality has not changed.
- Fragmented viewing: Viewers divide time among Shorts, TikTok, Reels, streaming services, games, podcasts, and creator communities.
- Variable advertising: Earnings can vary with geography, season, niche, advertiser demand, suitability decisions, and audience composition.
- Format mismatch: A channel may win short-form views without building repeat long-form viewing or customer relationships.
- Policy and rights risks: Automated monetization decisions, copyright claims, and advertiser-suitability rules can affect revenue.
YouTube says its monetization systems consider factors including the video, title, thumbnail, description, tags, and viewer engagement. It also acknowledges that automated decisions can be wrong and provides a review process. Creators can consult YouTube’s explanation of monetization decisions and reviews.
As a result, “YouTube is dying” may describe a real experience—falling reach, lower earnings, or a crowded niche—without accurately describing the platform as a whole. The evidence available here does not establish that creators are leaving YouTube at a platform-wide rate.
Is YouTube banning AI content?
No. YouTube’s monetization rules do not prohibit AI-assisted creation as a category. They target repetitive or mass-produced “inauthentic content” that fails to offer meaningful originality or value. The distinction matters: using AI to assist a creator is not the same as flooding the service with near-identical videos. YouTube’s monetization policy and policy clarification explain the approach.

AI offers creators tools for ideation, editing, translation, dubbing, and production. YouTube also uses AI in recommendations and safety systems, and says it is developing more tools for creators and viewers. But cheaper production can increase the volume of low-quality material, impersonations, misleading realistic footage, and synthetic misinformation. It can make it harder for viewers and advertisers to know what is authentic.
That makes YouTube’s challenge less about hosting enough videos and more about ranking, labeling, moderating, and monetizing an overwhelming supply. AI is a major risk and opportunity, but it is not evidence that the service itself is dying. Originality, trust, access, and community may become more valuable as generic content becomes easier to produce.
Can YouTube keep viewer and advertiser trust?
Trust is one of the platform’s central long-term risks. Misinformation, child safety, deepfakes, copyright enforcement, political content, recommendation transparency, and age-appropriate experiences all affect how viewers, creators, regulators, and advertisers judge the service.
YouTube faces a difficult balance: openness supports creator expression and public discussion; enforcement can protect users and advertisers; automation is necessary at scale but can make mistakes. Too much enforcement risks alienating creators, while too little can damage user confidence and advertiser willingness to spend. YouTube describes age-related safety work in its 2025 strategy update and explains review options for some monetization decisions in its help documentation.

Are TikTok and other services replacing YouTube?
Competition is serious, but each service is strong in different use cases. TikTok is built around rapid short-video discovery and trends; Instagram Reels benefits from social connections and creator-brand relationships. Twitch is important to some livestreaming communities. Spotify and podcast apps compete for spoken-word listening, while Netflix and other streaming services compete for premium viewing time.

YouTube’s advantages include search-driven discovery, a large back catalog, short and long video formats in one service, a substantial connected-TV presence, and advertising and subscription businesses. Its strategy is to combine those elements with podcasts, live content, music, shopping, and creator-led programming. The greater risk is attention fragmentation: people may continue using YouTube but spend fewer uninterrupted hours there or use it for fewer kinds of content.
What trends will shape YouTube through 2027 and beyond?
- More connected-TV viewing: YouTube will keep competing for living-room sessions and television advertising.
- Shorts as a discovery layer: Short video is likely to remain important for audience acquisition and trend participation, even when it does not convert every viewer to longer content.
- More professional creator programming: Creators and teams are building serialized shows and businesses rather than relying only on standalone uploads.
- Podcasts and live content: These formats can support longer sessions and community, complementing on-demand video.
- More commerce: Memberships, sponsorships, merchandise, product links, and shopping features can provide routes beyond ad revenue.
- AI-assisted production and stronger anti-spam enforcement: Tools may improve workflows, while YouTube needs to distinguish useful assistance from mass-produced material.
- Multiple paid offers: YouTube’s documented membership categories include individual, student, family, two-person, annual or prepaid options, Music Premium, and Premium Lite, with availability varying by location. See YouTube’s plan information.
These are strategic directions, not guarantees about future performance. Paid-plan availability and terms can vary by country and change over time; check the current offer for your location rather than assuming one universal lineup or price.
What should viewers, creators, advertisers, and businesses do?
Viewers
YouTube remains useful for searchable education, tutorials, reviews, music, podcasts, live events, and a broad international catalog. Another service may fit better if the priority is trend-led short video, scripted premium entertainment, a particular livestreaming community, or podcast-first listening. Choose by use case rather than assuming one service does everything best.

Creators
Treat YouTube as a core distribution channel when your work benefits from search, depth, television viewing, or several ways to monetize. Do not make the business dependent on one recommendation feed or advertising alone. Build direct relationships and assets such as a website, email list, customer database, community, products, services, sponsorships, or merchandise. Assess Shorts by whether it advances a business goal, not only by views.
Quick Recap
Advertisers and businesses
Evaluate campaigns by target geography, incremental reach, audience overlap, brand suitability, creator credibility, and conversion outcomes. A high view count does not necessarily indicate purchase intent. Compare Shorts and long-form placements on the objectives and audiences they actually serve, and consider connected-TV inventory where it fits the campaign. Google’s creator-marketing claims are available in its YouTube marketing analysis; treat sponsored research as such.
