Virgin River is not a real town: the series is set in Northern California, but its scenery and town exteriors were filmed at locations in British Columbia, including around Vancouver. You can visit some of those real filming locations, though no single place is the complete town of Virgin River.
Why Virgin River is fictional—but its scenery is real
Netflix describes the series’ setting as Northern California and its production location as Vancouver, British Columbia, and the surrounding mountainous areas. Destination Vancouver likewise calls Virgin River fictional and says the on-screen town is an amalgamation of locations around Vancouver. So there is no one real-world town to find; the familiar streets, landscapes and businesses come from several places.
That distinction matters when planning a visit. A recognizable exterior may be a real restaurant or public park, while the inside of a fictional business or home may have been filmed on a soundstage. The locations offer a chance to see parts of the show’s real-world backdrop, not to step into a complete, functioning Virgin River.
Filming locations you can explore around British Columbia
The stops are spread across the Vancouver region and beyond. These are the locations identified by Destination Vancouver’s filming-location itinerary; check with each site or relevant transport provider for current visitor access and operating details.
#1 Best Overall
| Area | What appeared in the series | What a visitor should know |
|---|---|---|
| Snug Cove, Bowen Island | Establishing shots featuring streets, the local library and Artisan Lane. | A real community that provides some of the show’s town-like views. Destination Vancouver describes the ferry from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver as a 20-minute ride; verify current schedules before travelling. |
| Squamish | The Watershed Grill exterior stood in for Jack’s Bar; the area also supplied river and waterfall scenes, including at Shannon Falls Provincial Park. | The restaurant and provincial park are real places, but the series’ bar interior was filmed on a soundstage. |
| Burnaby | Fraser Foreshore Park appeared in a food-truck scene; Deer Lake Park and picnic areas behind Hart House were also used. | These are outdoor filming locations; confirm any site-specific access or visitor guidance before setting out. |
| Port Coquitlam | Samz Pub and In a Wink Beautique appeared as local businesses. | Check directly with the businesses for current hours and whether visitors are welcome. |
| North Vancouver | Murdo Frazer Cabin played the exterior of Mel’s home. | Do not assume the cabin is open to visitors; check current access information with the District of North Vancouver. |
What you can—and cannot—see at Jack’s Bar and Mel’s cabin
The Watershed Grill in Squamish is a real restaurant whose exterior was used for Jack’s Bar. In a Netflix Tudum interview, the series’ location manager and scout W. Robert “Fluffy” Millar said, “Jack’s Bar is at this great little restaurant on the river in Squamish called the Watershed Grill.” He explained that the production filmed the exterior by the river dike and used a soundstage for the interior. The restaurant is not a complete real-life version of Jack’s fictional bar.
The same separation applies to Mel’s home: Murdo Frazer Cabin supplied the exterior, while the cabin interior was built on a soundstage. Netflix’s interview with Millar discussed restoration planning for the cabin, but does not establish current public access. Check with the District of North Vancouver before considering a visit.

How to plan a filming-location trip
- Choose a manageable group of stops. Bowen Island, Squamish, Burnaby, Port Coquitlam and North Vancouver are separate areas, not one compact movie set. Build the trip around the locations you most want to see rather than expecting to cover the whole fictional town at one stop.
- Confirm access with the people who manage each place. Check the restaurant or shop’s current hours and visitor policies, and consult the relevant park or local authority for outdoor sites. A filming credit does not guarantee that a building is open to the public.
- Check transport close to your travel date. The ferry crossing to Bowen Island is described by Destination Vancouver as a 20-minute ride from Horseshoe Bay, but schedules and travel arrangements can change. Confirm details with the ferry operator before departure.
- Respect residential and working locations. A filming site may be a private property or an active business. View exteriors only where access is permitted, and follow posted guidance rather than entering to look for a scene’s interior.
What the production means for British Columbia
In an article published August 4, 2025, Netflix reported that Virgin River Season 5 generated $44.4 million in economic impact in British Columbia, supported more than 390 jobs and involved 500 businesses. Those are figures reported by Netflix about the production’s local impact, not an independently audited estimate.
