Ryan Guzman was not leaving 9-1-1, according to his March 2025 comments—but Eddie Diaz’s future with the Los Angeles 118 was less certain. The season 8 cliffhanger had Eddie considering a move to Texas to repair his relationship with his son, Christopher. Later interviews clarified that the actor’s status, Eddie’s location and Eddie’s firehouse job were separate questions.
Was Ryan Guzman leaving 9-1-1?
No. In a March 13, 2025 interview with TheWrap, Guzman said Eddie’s story would spend time in Texas and described returning to the 118 as the “end goal,” while adding that he did not know the timeframe. The interview reported that Guzman was not leaving the series. That answered the question about the actor at that point in season 8; it did not settle Eddie’s eventual job or location.
Why was Eddie considering a move to Texas?
In the November 21, 2024 fall finale, Eddie was confronting the growing distance between himself and Christopher, who was thriving in Texas. Speaking to TV Insider that day, showrunner Tim Minear said Eddie felt he needed to give something up to focus on repairing the relationship. Minear put it this way: “Eddie needs to be the one to give up something, to walk away from something in order to really focus on repairing that relationship with Chris.”
The cliffhanger was therefore about a character weighing a family decision, not confirmation that Guzman was exiting the show. TheWrap’s November 21, 2024 interview also described Eddie as serious about moving, but seriousness within the story is not the same as a confirmed cast departure.

What did Tim Minear tease about Buck spiraling?
Minear said Buck would be torn: he wanted to support Eddie and understood how important Christopher was, but he also cared about Christopher and would feel the loss of their closeness. “I think Buck feels completely torn. He wants to support Eddie. He understands how important that relationship with Christopher is,” Minear told TV Insider on November 21, 2024.
Minear also said Buck would pour “all of his abandonment issues and anxiety into something else,” with those issues deepening by the end of episode 9. He framed this as Buck’s emotional direction in the story—not a clinical diagnosis. In a separate interview with TheWrap that day, Minear called Buck “gutted” by Eddie’s possible move and said it would “drive him up a tree a little bit.” Those comments teased emotional turmoil, rather than confirming a specific outcome for either character.

Where did Eddie’s season 8 story leave him?
Guzman’s later comments added a more complicated update. In a TVLine interview published May 15, 2025, after the season 8 finale, he said Eddie had returned to Los Angeles and was living under Buck’s roof, but had accepted a job at a firehouse in El Paso. Guzman described Eddie’s position at the 118 as “up in the air.” He also said Eddie would choose his son over the 118: “I know he loves the 118, but when it comes down to his son or the 118, he always chooses his son.”
That finale-era account leaves two facts side by side: Eddie was back in Los Angeles and living with Buck, while his new job was in El Paso. It does not establish that he had resumed working at the 118. Guzman’s earlier hope that Eddie would return to the 118 was an “end goal,” not a guarantee or a timetable.
