Viktor is not portrayed as evil from the start of Arcane. He begins as an idealistic scientist, but his transformation through the Hexcore leads him onto a grimmer path, where the consequences of his choices can make him a tragic antagonist. The show’s messianic imagery is not proof that he is good, and the Hexcore’s influence does not by itself erase his agency.
Why Viktor is not evil from the beginning
Netflix’s November 16, 2024 Arcane champion guide describes Viktor as an idealist in Season 1. He works with Jayce as a scientist, and the guide says Jayce fuses him with the Hexcore to save his life. That fusion sends Viktor down a grimmer path; it does not establish that he was secretly a villain all along.
That distinction matters: a character’s early motives and later actions are not the same moral question. Viktor’s original idealism helps explain the tragedy of his arc, but it cannot by itself excuse harmful outcomes that follow.
What the Hexcore changes
The Hexcore is a major factor in Viktor’s transformation. In a November 25, 2024 production feature, Fortiche art director Julien Georgel explains that the Hexcore heals and transforms Viktor’s damaged body, giving him the opportunity to build a church and community. This establishes the transformation as part of the story, not as proof that Viktor has no control over what he does afterward.

Georgel also describes the anomaly as a “raw and unstable expression of the arcane.” The feature connects it to a pattern of chaos and calls it the source of energy slowly corrupting the universe. Those are descriptions of the fictional world and its visual storytelling, not an independent explanation of Viktor’s morality.
Why Viktor looks like a messiah—and why that is not a moral verdict
The production feature says the artists wanted Viktor to look like “a human messiah,” with a “superpositive and peaceful feeling,” despite his body appearing as an organic machine made by the Hexcore. This design choice explains the contrast in his appearance: he can seem calm, hopeful, and benevolent even as the larger story raises questions about his transformation and its effects.

Messianic imagery signals how Viktor and his movement may be presented, but it does not settle whether his actions are good. A peaceful appearance or stated promise of improvement cannot, on its own, make harmful or coercive consequences harmless.
Is Viktor better understood as a tragic antagonist?
“Tragic antagonist” is a more careful reading than “evil from the start.” It leaves room for both sides of Viktor’s arc: his earlier idealism and the Hexcore’s role in his transformation, as well as the responsibility attached to the choices and consequences that follow. The official sources establish a grimmer path and a changed Viktor, but do not resolve every question about how much agency he retains.

- Consider his motives: his early idealism helps explain what he hopes to achieve.
- Consider the consequences: good intentions do not cancel harm caused by later actions.
- Consider the Hexcore’s influence without treating it as absolution: it shapes his transformation, but the story’s account of that influence does not establish that Viktor has no agency.
In other words, viewers can reasonably judge Viktor’s later actions as villainous without claiming he was always evil or that his transformation makes his choices morally irrelevant.

The cited creator and production sources do not give a definitive moral label for Viktor. Netflix’s November 26, 2024 Season 2 guide quotes co-creator Christian Linke saying the story of Arcane was planned to wrap up with its second season, while Runeterra would be the setting for further stories. That is context about the series, not a judgment of Viktor.

- Type: Action Figure Sixth Scale Figure
Likewise, an Animation World Network interview published December 9, 2024 discusses the finale and character choices but does not explicitly settle whether Viktor should be called evil. The label is therefore best presented as an interpretation of his arc, not a quoted creator verdict.
Verdict
Viktor is not shown as an uncomplicated villain from the beginning. Arcane presents an idealist whose transformation takes him in a darker direction. Calling him a tragic antagonist captures that shift: the Hexcore helps explain what changes, while the moral weight of his later choices depends on their consequences—not on how peaceful or messianic he looks.
