Tyson’s Run is inspired by a real childhood conversation, but the available first-party sources do not establish it as a true-story biography. Writer-director Kim Bass said the idea began after he spoke with a boy who had stopped wanting to run because his classmates were faster. The film’s specific characters and marathon plot are presented as a dramatic story, not as a documented account of that boy’s life.
What inspired Tyson’s Run?
In a March 4, 2022 interview, Bass recalled speaking with a boy who felt discouraged when the other boys in his class ran faster and left him behind. Bass said that conversation was “the nugget, or the sort of the spark” for the idea that became Tyson’s Run. He described the boy giving up rather than struggling to keep pace, and said the exchange stayed with him.
That account supports describing the film as inspired by a childhood experience. It does not identify the boy as Tyson Hollerman or establish that the film retells his life.
What happens in the film?
The official synopsis describes Tyson as a 15-year-old attending public school for the first time. He befriends Aklilu, a marathon runner, while helping his father clean up after a football team. Tyson then decides to run a marathon, hoping to earn his father’s approval. Autism and family relationships are central to the story.

The synopsis presents those events as the film’s plot; it does not say that a real Tyson or the depicted marathon events inspired the story. The available sources do not substantiate that Tyson Hollerman is a real person or that the marathon plot happened as shown.
Who made the film, and who plays Tyson?
Kim Bass wrote and directed the 2022 film, and Major Dodson plays Tyson. In an interview, Bass said Dodson was cast after auditioning and that the production learned he was on the autism spectrum after the casting decision. A distributor announcement described Dodson as an autistic actor playing an autistic teen.
